Chapter 5 - The Exit

Damian reached under the desk. He hesitated for a fraction of a second, his pride warring with his instinct for survival. But the sound of the front door finally giving way with a catastrophic crash shattered his hesitation. Gunfire erupted in the foyer—Russo and the other guard engaging the Moretti hit squad.
Damian flipped the toggle switch in the opposite direction.
The heavy steel shutters covering the private elevator banked groaned, then smoothly retracted into the walls. The magnetic locks on the elevator doors disengaged with a soft ping.
Claire walked over to the desk. She picked up the signed divorce papers, folded them neatly, and slid them into her leather tote bag. She did not run. She did not panic. Even as the sounds of shouting and gunfire echoed from the living room, she moved with the calm, methodical precision of a woman who had meticulously planned every footstep of her escape.
She walked to the private elevator and pressed the call button. The doors opened immediately.
Damian stood in the doorway of the study, his weapon raised, preparing to join the firefight in his foyer. He looked back at her one last time. The anger in his eyes had been replaced by a grim, reluctant respect.
"You won't survive out there, Claire," Damian said over the noise of the battle. "The Morettis know you gave them the codes. They'll consider you a loose end. Without my protection, you're a target."
Claire stepped into the wood-paneled elevator, the interior lights bright and steady, a stark contrast to the blood-red nightmare she was leaving behind. She looked at the man who had stolen three years of her life, feeling nothing but a cold, profound emptiness.
"The Morettis don't know who gave them the codes, Damian," Claire said, pressing the button for the ground floor. "They think the intel came from your underboss. I routed the encrypted drive through his personal IP address."
Damian’s eyes widened in shock as the final piece of her strategy locked into place. She hadn't just orchestrated a distraction; she had framed his second-in-command, ensuring that even if Damian survived the night, his empire would tear itself apart from the inside in a paranoid civil war.
She had burned his entire world to the ground, and she was walking away without a single drop of blood on her hands.

"Goodbye, Damian," Claire said softly.
The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the sight of his stunned face and the sound of the escalating violence. The car descended smoothly, leaving the Arcadia, the cage, and the mafia boss behind. Claire leaned against the polished wood wall, feeling the gentle vibration of the descent. She closed her eyes, the scent of smoke fading from her clothes, and took her first deep breath of true, uncompromised freedom.
