Chapter 2 - The Woman Who Refused to Be Blamed

Khloe woke the next morning to the soft sound of rain against the hospital window.
For a few seconds, she did not remember where she was.
Then she tried to move her wrist.
Pain shot through her arm.
The memory returned all at once.
The courthouse.
Vanessa’s face.
The staircase.
Harrison’s voice calling her name.
Khloe placed both hands over her stomach as best she could.
The baby moved.
It was faint, but unmistakable.
A tiny flutter.
A reminder that she was still there.
Khloe closed her eyes and cried silently.
Not because she was weak.
Not because she wanted Richard back.
She cried because she had spent six years believing she knew the man she married.
Richard had been charming when they met.
He remembered birthdays.
He sent flowers when she had difficult meetings.
He held her hand at charity events and told people she was the best thing that ever happened to him.
But now every memory felt contaminated.
Every loving gesture had become evidence of how easily he could lie.
Harrison entered an hour later carrying coffee for himself and tea for her.
He looked as though he had not slept.
“Good morning,” he said.
Khloe stared at him.
“Did you sleep at all?”
“I had work.”
“You sat in that chair all night, didn’t you?”
Harrison did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Khloe shifted carefully against the pillows.
“What happened with Vanessa?”
“She spoke to the police.”
Khloe’s eyes widened.
“What did she say?”
“Enough to make Richard nervous.”
Harrison sat beside the bed.
“The detectives are treating the fall as an assault investigation. The video is clear. It shows her moving toward you, arguing with you, and putting her hands on you.”
“And Richard?”
“The audio captured him telling her to do it.”
Khloe looked away.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “He wanted me hurt.”
“He wanted you intimidated.”
“But he didn’t care if I lost the baby.”
Harrison’s jaw tightened.
“No. He didn’t.”
Khloe turned toward him.
“I want to talk to the investigators.”
“You don’t have to do that today.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Khloe—”
“I spent too long allowing him to make decisions for me.” Her voice was soft but steady. “I don’t want him deciding whether I speak anymore.”
Harrison looked at his younger sister.
A week ago, she had been afraid to open Richard’s messages.
Now she was lying in a hospital bed with bruises on her face and determination in her eyes.
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Federal Special Agent Naomi Brooks arrived that afternoon with Detective Elena Ward from the county police department.
They did not treat Khloe like a fragile victim.
They treated her like a witness whose truth mattered.
Naomi placed a folder on the small hospital table.
“Mrs. Harrington,” she said, “we are investigating potential financial fraud involving your husband, Harrington Commercial Group, and several related business entities.”
Khloe looked at the documents.
“I know.”
“We also have evidence suggesting that your electronic signature was used on loan documents without your knowledge.”
Khloe swallowed.
“I never signed them.”
“We believe you.”
The simple sentence nearly broke her.
For months, Richard had made her question her own memory.
He told her she had signed papers and forgotten.
He told her pregnancy hormones were making her emotional.
He told her she worried too much.
Now, for the first time, someone outside her family was telling her plainly that she was not crazy.
Detective Ward opened another file.
“We need to ask about Vanessa Kensington.”
Khloe’s fingers curled around the bedsheet.
“She worked with Richard?”
“She was listed as a consultant for one of the holding companies.”
“She was his mistress.”
Naomi exchanged a brief look with the detective.
“Did Richard ever discuss moving assets into her name?”
“No.”
“Did he pressure you to sign anything?”
Khloe thought back.
There had been dinners where Richard pushed papers toward her between courses.
There had been late-night emails marked urgent.
There had been moments when he became impatient if she asked questions.
“He said it was normal,” Khloe explained. “He told me I was his wife, that we were building a future together. He said signing documents was part of being a team.”
Naomi took notes.
“Did you ever have access to company financial records?”
“Not directly. Richard handled most of it.”
“Did he ever ask you to use your personal accounts?”
Khloe hesitated.
“Once. He said a payment needed to pass through quickly because one of his business accounts was being audited.”
“Did you send money?”
“I transferred fifty thousand dollars from our joint account to an account he gave me.”
Naomi wrote down the information.
“Do you still have the messages?”
Khloe looked at Harrison.
Maya had saved everything.
“Yes,” she said. “My brother’s team preserved the cloud data.”
Naomi nodded.
“That may be very important.”
By evening, the hospital hallway was crowded with attorneys, investigators, and staff members who came and went with quiet urgency.
Then Maya entered carrying a thick binder.
“I found the account,” she said.
Harrison looked up from his phone.
“What account?”
“The one Richard used to move the investor funds before they reached the Delaware trust.”
Khloe watched as Maya laid pages across the table.
“There were four layers of transfers,” Maya explained. “He tried to make it look like ordinary business expenses. But the timing is wrong, the vendor names are fake, and the invoices repeat the same formatting errors.”
Harrison studied the pages.
“How much?”
“Just over twenty-three million dollars.”
Khloe’s face went white.
Maya continued.
“And there’s something else. Richard was not acting alone.”
“Vanessa?” Khloe asked.
“Not exactly.” Maya turned one page. “There is another signature on several internal approvals.”
The name on the document was Daniel Price.
Richard’s attorney.
Harrison’s eyes narrowed.
“He helped structure the transfers,” Maya said. “Maybe he believed they were legal. Maybe he didn’t. But he has exposure.”
Khloe felt cold.
Richard had not just betrayed her.
He had built an entire system around betrayal.
Lawyers.
Shell companies.
Fake invoices.
Trusts.
People whose job was supposed to be protecting the law had helped him hide behind it.
Later that night, Richard appeared at the hospital.
He was not allowed into Khloe’s room.
Two security professionals stood outside her door, and Harrison had made it clear that no one entered without permission.
Still, Richard waited in the hallway.
When Khloe learned he was there, she asked Harrison to let her see him.
Harrison’s answer was immediate.
“No.”
“I need to.”
“You do not.”
“I need to look at him and know I’m done.”
Harrison studied her.
Then he nodded once.
Richard entered the room looking exhausted.
His navy suit from court had been replaced with a black sweater and expensive coat. His face was pale. His confidence had been replaced by calculation.
“Khloe,” he said quietly.
She did not respond.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For everything that happened.”
“What happened?”
Richard looked toward the floor.
“Vanessa lost control.”
“Did she?”
“She was upset.”
“Did you tell her to push me?”
His head snapped up.
“No.”
“The video says otherwise.”
Richard’s face tightened.
“You don’t understand the context.”
Khloe laughed once.
It was not a happy sound.
“Context?” she repeated. “I am in a hospital bed because your mistress shoved me down stairs after you told her to end it.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“You didn’t mean for me to survive?”
Richard stepped closer.
“I meant for this situation to stop.”
Khloe stared at him.
Then she understood.
He was not sorry.
He was angry that she had become difficult to control.
“You wanted me scared,” she said.
Richard said nothing.
“You wanted me to give up the divorce. You wanted me to stop the investigation. You wanted me to sign whatever you put in front of me.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“You forged my name.”
Richard’s silence confirmed it.
Khloe looked down at her stomach.
“My daughter will know the truth about you,” she said.
Richard’s face hardened.
“You cannot keep her from me.”
“I won’t have to.”
At that moment, Agent Brooks appeared in the doorway.
“Mr. Harrington,” she said, “we need you to come with us.”
Richard turned.
“Am I under arrest?”
“Not yet.”
His eyes shifted toward Khloe.
She held his gaze.
For six years, he had trained her to fear his anger.
Tonight, he was the one afraid.
As he was escorted down the hallway, Richard received a message on his phone from Daniel Price.

It contained only six words.
Vanessa has hired her own lawyer.
