Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Name

Three black SUVs arrived before sunrise.

Harper stood in the apartment hallway with a kitchen knife in one hand and Lily’s emergency medication bag in the other.

When Marco Bellini stepped through the front entrance with four armed men behind him, Harper raised the knife.

“Take one more step and I swear—”

“Miss Quinn,” Marco said calmly, “we are here to move you.”

“I’m not going anywhere with Damian Croft.”

“You are if you want your sister alive.”

Lily rolled into the hallway behind Harper.

“Harper,” she whispered, “maybe we should listen.”

Harper hated that Lily was right.

Within fifteen minutes, they were inside a black SUV moving through the dark streets of Manhattan. Harper sat beside Lily, holding her hand. Marco sat in the front passenger seat, speaking quietly into an earpiece.

“Where are you taking us?” Harper asked.

“To a secure residence.”

“Owned by Damian?”

“Yes.”

“Of course.”

The residence turned out to be a penthouse occupying the top two floors of a private building overlooking Central Park.

It was beautiful in the coldest possible way.

Floor-to-ceiling windows. White marble. Black steel. Silent guards at every entrance.

And Damian Croft standing near a fireplace in a dark sweater, the faint red mark of Harper’s slap still visible along his cheek.

He looked at her without smiling.

“Harper.”

“You had my life destroyed.”

“I had your employment options restricted.”

“That is a very billionaire way of saying the same thing.”

Lily squeezed Harper’s hand, silently begging her not to provoke him.

Damian’s gaze shifted to Lily.

“You will have access to a physical therapist, a specialist, and transportation to any appointment you need.”

Lily looked uncomfortable. “Why?”

“Because you are in danger.”

“No,” Harper said sharply. “She is in danger because of you.”

Damian did not deny it.

“Yes.”

The admission startled her.

Marco placed a file on the marble table.

“Victor Hale,” Damian said. “He owns a rival shipping empire and several criminal networks operating along the Eastern Seaboard.”

Harper looked at him. “You mean cartel networks.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“You know what I am.”

“I know enough.”

“Victor believes I am becoming too powerful. He wants to weaken me before a major port acquisition next month.”

“And Martha?”

“His men intended to provoke me into publicly humiliating her. Then they planned to leak the footage and frame me as an unstable man abusing workers.”

Harper’s voice rose. “But you did humiliate her.”

The room went silent.

Damian looked down.

For the first time, the carefully controlled billionaire mask slipped.

“Yes,” he said.

Harper stared at him.

“You do not get to act like this was only a setup. You chose to threaten her. You chose to make her cry.”

“I did.”

“And then you punished me because I called you out.”

“I did.”

Her anger lost momentum because he was not defending himself.

Damian continued, “My world rewards cruelty. I have spent years believing that if I showed mercy, people would use it against me.”

“That is not an excuse.”

“No,” he said quietly. “It is not.”

Harper looked at Lily.

Her sister’s eyes were fixed on Damian with guarded curiosity.

“What do you want from us?” Harper asked.

“Nothing.”

“That is a lie.”

Damian’s mouth almost curved.

“Fine. I want you to stay alive until Victor Hale is found. I want Lily protected. And I want Martha protected as well.”

“Martha?”

“She has been moved somewhere safe. Her pension has been restored. She will never need to work another shift.”

Harper’s expression hardened.

“You are trying to make up for it with money.”

“No,” Damian said. “I am trying to repair the damage I caused. Money is only the first thing I can offer.”

Before Harper could respond, the penthouse security system flashed red.

Marco touched his earpiece.

“What happened?”

“Therapy center,” a guard’s voice said. “There was an explosion in the parking garage.”

Lily gasped.

Harper’s face went white.

“That was supposed to be her appointment this morning.”

Damian turned toward Marco.

“Find everyone involved.”

Marco nodded.

Damian’s expression became terrifyingly calm.

“And protect the Quinn sisters.”

Harper looked at him.

“You are making this worse.”

Damian met her eyes.

“No,” he said. “Victor already made it worse.”

He stepped closer, stopping at a respectful distance.

“I am going to make sure he regrets it.”

Harper should have been frightened only of Victor Hale.

Instead, what scared her most was realizing she might begin to believe Damian Croft meant it.
