Chapter 9: The Media Guillotine

They didn't kill Elias Thorne. They did something much, much worse.
They let him live in the ruins of his own arrogance.
Elias, terrified by his near-death experience, assumed Damian would retreat to the shadows. He assumed the violence was the only weapon they had left. But Harper had spent the cab ride to Wall Street making phone calls.
As Damian and Harper walked out of the Sterling Tower lobby, the plaza was swarming with news vans, reporters, and flashing cameras.
Martha’s foundation had mobilized. Over two hundred hospitality workers, physical therapists, and patients—including Lily—were standing on the steps of the tower, holding up the medical records Elias’s men had thrown into the street.
The optics were catastrophic for the billionaire.
Harper stepped up to the microphones waiting at the edge of the plaza. Damian stood beside her, perfectly composed, the immaculate, reformed businessman once again. He let her take the stage.
"An hour ago, Elias Thorne, CEO of Thorne Equities, ordered the illegal, forceful eviction of a trauma recovery clinic," Harper announced, her voice echoing across the plaza, carried live on three local news networks. "He did this not for financial gain, but as a retaliatory strike against a charity foundation that refused to be extorted by his corrupt zoning board allies."
The reporters shouted questions, cameras flashing blindingly.
"We have submitted irrefutable evidence of Thorne’s financial extortion, including audio recordings of his bribes to Alderman Richards, to the Federal Bureau of Investigation," Harper continued, holding up a manila folder. "The era of billionaires using vulnerable citizens as collateral damage in their corporate games is over. We will not be intimidated. We will not be silenced."
The fallout was apocalyptic.
By noon the next day, Elias Thorne was arrested by federal agents at Teterboro Airport trying to board a private jet to a non-extradition country. His stock plummeted. His board of directors voted unanimously to remove him as CEO.
The physical therapy clinic was immediately restored, its lease securely transferred to the Croft Community Trust at a fraction of the cost, subsidized by the panicked Thorne Equities board trying to save their public image.
The war was over. And Harper had won it without spilling a single drop of blood.
That night, Harper and Damian sat in the quiet, dimly lit living room of her apartment. The television was on mute, showing footage of Elias being led away in handcuffs.
Damian was sitting on the edge of the sofa, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He looked exhausted, stripped bare of the armor he usually wore.
Harper walked over and sat beside him. She handed him a glass of scotch and leaned her head against his shoulder.
"I almost lost everything today," Damian said quietly, staring at the amber liquid in his glass. "If you hadn't walked through those doors..."
"But I did," Harper reminded him, resting her hand on his thigh.
"The anger..." Damian closed his eyes, a heavy sigh escaping his chest. "It’s a reflex, Harper. When he touched Lily, all I saw was a threat to you. I didn't care about the consequences. I just wanted to eradicate the danger."
Harper shifted, turning to face him. She reached out, gently taking the glass from his hand and setting it on the coffee table. She took both of his large, scarred hands in hers.
"You are a protector, Damian," Harper said softly, her eyes searching his. "But protection doesn't have to mean destruction. You stopped today. You had the power to end his life, and you chose to walk away. That is true power. You proved that the man who used to run this city with fear is gone."
Damian looked up at her, the profound, overwhelming love in his eyes shining brilliantly in the dim light.
"I am terrified of failing you," Damian confessed, a vulnerability he had never shown to another living soul slipping into his voice.
May you like
"You couldn't fail me if you tried," Harper smiled, leaning forward to press her lips to his.
It was a slow, deep, anchoring kiss. A kiss that sealed the cracks in his soul. They had faced the darkness of his past, and they had survived it together. The trust between them was no longer an experiment; it was forged in titanium.
