Chapter 2 - Emily is standing in the dim

If a security camera in that private club had captured that exact, paradigm-shifting fraction of a second outside the door—it would have documented the exact moment a supportive partner became a lethal adversary. In the image, Emily is standing in the dim, wood-paneled hallway in her elegant winter coat, one hand covering her mouth in initial shock, while through the cracked door, the blurred figures of James and his inner circle are visible, laughing and toasting to his arrogance.

But the shock in that image only lasted a second. By the time Emily reached the forty-second floor of the Kane Meridian building, she was a ghost in the machine.

The office was dark and empty. Emily walked past the glowing server rooms and straight into the legal archives.

Ten years ago, when Kane Meridian was just an idea in a cramped apartment, Emily had drafted the foundational IP (Intellectual Property) assignments. Because James was drowning in personal debt at the time, Emily had placed the original source code patents and the holding company rights entirely in her name to protect them from his creditors. James had always meant to have the corporate lawyers restructure it, but he was always too busy being a "visionary" to deal with the paperwork.

He treated the company's legal foundation the exact same way he treated her—like furniture. Always there, always holding him up, never requiring his attention.

Emily sat at her desk, logged into the executive portal, and spent the next six hours drafting the corporate equivalent of an execution order.
