Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Pearl Bracelet

The worst document in the binder was not a bank statement.

It was not a text message.

It was not even the recording.

It was a medical consent form.

Six months earlier, when I was twenty-eight weeks pregnant, Preston insisted that I attend an appointment at a private prenatal clinic outside Richmond.

He said the doctor was one of the best specialists in Virginia.

He said he wanted to make sure Owen was healthy.

At the time, I believed him.

But after I found his secret transfers, I began reviewing every file connected to our pregnancy.

That was when I found a copy of the consent form.

My name was signed at the bottom.

But I had never signed it.

The document authorized the release of my medical information to Preston and to a “family medical adviser.”

The adviser’s name was Celeste Harrow.

Judge Mercer read the page twice.

Then she looked at Celeste.

“Ms. Harrow, are you a medical professional?”

Celeste swallowed.

“No.”

“Then why were you given access to Mrs. Calloway’s medical records?”

Celeste looked at Preston.

He stared straight ahead.

I answered for her.

“Because Celeste was not merely Preston’s family friend.”

My voice trembled once.

Then I steadied it.

“She was helping him create a false record that I was mentally unstable after childbirth.”

Preston’s attorney stood again.

“Your Honor, this is outrageous speculation.”

“Then explain the documents,” Judge Mercer said sharply.

The room became silent.

I reached into the binder and removed a folder of printed emails.

“These messages are between Preston, Celeste, and a man named Dr. Nathan Bell.”

Judge Mercer looked at the name.

“Dr. Bell is affiliated with the private clinic?”

“Yes.”

“He was paid through one of Preston’s companies,” I continued. “The company transferred money into an account linked to Celeste. Then Dr. Bell wrote notes suggesting I had anxiety, paranoia, and emotional instability.”

My throat tightened.

“I was pregnant. I had normal fears. I asked normal questions. But every time I expressed concern, they documented it as evidence that I was irrational.”

Preston finally spoke.

“You do not understand what you read.”

I looked directly at him.

“I understand enough.”

Then I held up the last email.

It was dated two days before Owen’s birth.

Preston wrote:

Once she delivers, we file immediately. If the court believes she is unstable, we control the child and the trust issue disappears.

Judge Mercer looked at me.

“What trust issue?”

I took a slow breath.

“The Calloway Family Trust was scheduled to transfer a significant number of shares into Owen’s name when he was born. Preston was named temporary custodian unless I challenged it.”

The judge’s expression hardened.

“And you believe this custody action was related to those shares?”

“I know it was.”

Celeste suddenly began crying.

“I didn’t know he would go this far,” she whispered.

Preston turned toward her.

“Do not start pretending now.”

Celeste’s eyes widened.

“You told me she was unstable.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing.”

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I knew about the money. I knew about the clinic records. But I didn’t know you were going to take her baby.”

That was the moment I understood something important.

Celeste was guilty.

But Preston was worse.

He had used her greed, jealousy, and fear.

He had used my pregnancy.

And he was willing to use our son.

Judge Mercer leaned forward.

“Mr. Calloway, this court is suspending your emergency custody petition pending immediate investigation.”

Preston went pale.

“You cannot do that.”

“I can,” she said. “And I am.”

Then she looked at me.

“Mrs. Calloway, do you have somewhere safe to stay?”

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“Good. You and your child will remain there. Mr. Calloway is not to contact you except through counsel.”

Preston stared at me as if he could not believe I had escaped his plan.

But he still did not know about the final document.

May you like

The one I found only the night before.

The document proving that his betrayal began long before Owen was born.
