Chapter 3 - The Surgical Severing

The moment Catherine stepped off the stage, the gala transitioned from a formal dinner into a frantic, high-stakes networking frenzy. The Vanguard founder rushed toward the VIP alcove to embrace Catherine, entirely ignoring Richard, who was standing frozen near the bar.

"Richard, what is happening?" Jessica demanded, her voice sharp with rising panic. The illusion of her own power was rapidly evaporating. Junior executives were already whispering, casting mocking glances at the mistress who had paraded in wearing scarlet, only to be entirely eclipsed by the wife who owned the building. "She bought Vanguard? How does she have a hundred and fifty million dollars? You said she was entirely dependent on your trust!"

"Shut up," Richard snarled, his carefully constructed veneer of calm shattering into frantic, ugly pieces. "Just... wait here. Do not move. Do not speak to anyone."

He abandoned her near a pillar, his polished shoes carrying him aggressively through the crowd. He shoved past a state senator and a hedge fund manager, his eyes locked on the VIP alcove where Catherine was holding court.

He bypassed her newly acquired security detail—two massive men in dark suits who stepped aside only when Catherine offered them a minuscule, subtle nod.

Richard stepped into the private alcove. The air was colder here.

"Catherine," Richard hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound rage and absolute terror. "What the hell do you think you are doing? What is this?"

Catherine turned slowly, a flute of sparkling water in her hand. She looked at him with the clinical, detached curiosity of a scientist observing a dying insect pinned to a board.

"I am socializing, Richard," Catherine said smoothly. "You always said it was important for me to maintain a philanthropic presence to soften your public image. I am simply following your directives."

"Don't play games with me!" Richard snapped, stepping closer, desperately trying to reassert his physical dominance. "Where did you get the capital to acquire Vanguard? You don't have access to those kinds of liquid assets. I control the primary holding accounts!"

Catherine took a slow, elegant sip of her water. "You control the accounts that I allow you to see, Richard. Did you really spend ten years believing that the Vance family fortune—the shipping empire my grandfather built—was entirely locked in a passive, low-yield trust? Did you genuinely believe I spent my days arranging flowers because I lacked the intellectual capacity to read a balance sheet?"

Richard stared at her, his mind frantically trying to reconcile the woman standing before him with the submissive wife he thought he knew. "You signed the post-nuptial agreements. You surrendered the voting rights."

"I signed documents engineered by my own lawyers, which granted you voting rights over proxy shells," Catherine corrected him, her voice dropping to a terrifying, icy whisper. "For ten years, I allowed you to play at being a titan. I let you think you built Sterling Innovations through your own sheer brilliance. I stayed in the shadows, quietly funding your early ventures through anonymous venture capital firms, because I wanted a partner who felt powerful. I wanted to build an empire together."

She stepped forward, closing the distance between them. The scent of her perfume—something sharp, expensive, and entirely unfamiliar—filled his senses.

"But you didn't want a partner, Richard," Catherine said, her eyes locking onto his with devastating intensity. "You wanted a pet. You wanted a woman who would sit quietly in a penthouse while you paraded your mediocrity and your twenty-seven-year-old analysts around the city. You underestimated my intelligence, you insulted my loyalty, and you jeopardized my assets with your reckless, aggressive mismanagement. So, I am simply withdrawing my capital."
