Chapter 1 - The Altar’s Collapse

The silence in St. Matthew’s was absolute, broken only by the rustle of expensive silk and the rapid clicking of a guest’s smartphone camera.
Madeline Shaw stood on the altar, looking down at the man she was supposed to marry in less than ten minutes. She did not look angry; she looked like a woman who had just realized she was standing on a trapdoor.
"Caleb," Madeline repeated, her voice cutting through the heavy air. "Did you have a relationship with her?"
Caleb could not tear his eyes away from Aaliyah, nor the five identical faces staring back at him. The scene was surreal, perfectly captured in A3.jpg, the five boys standing in perfect formation, an undeniable testament to a past Caleb had been forced to bury.
"Yes," Caleb whispered, his voice cracking. He turned to Madeline, the guilt of eight years spilling out of him. "I loved her, Madeline. We were going to be married. And then... she vanished. I thought she didn't want me."
"I didn't vanish," Aaliyah said smoothly, her voice echoing perfectly off the vaulted ceilings. She slipped her cream-colored coat off her shoulders, handing it to Isaiah. Beneath it, she wasn't wearing a simple dress for a wedding guest. She was wearing a pristine, custom-tailored white double-breasted chef's coat, the insignia of the Brooks Culinary Group embroidered in silver on the lapel.
Richard Whitmore stepped out of his pew, his silver hair catching the light from the stained glass. The patriarch of Whitmore Hospitality looked at Aaliyah with the cold, reptilian calculation of a man who was used to swatting away inconveniences with a checkbook.
"Security," Richard barked, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Escort this woman and her children off the premises immediately. This is a private event."
Two broad-shouldered men in dark suits began to move down the side aisles.
"I wouldn't do that, Richard," Aaliyah warned, not taking a single step back. She reached into her leather purse and pulled out a thick, bound legal dossier. "Unless you want the Shaw family to learn exactly how you financed the merger they are signing tomorrow morning."

Madeline’s father, Arthur Shaw, stood up from the front row. "What are you talking about?"
"This isn't just about a broken heart, Arthur," Aaliyah said, her eyes locked on Richard. "This is about federal wire fraud. And Richard is going to stand exactly where he is while I explain it."
