Chapter 3 - The Broken Toy and the Hidden Truth

The North Wing smelled of dust, old lavender perfume, and abandonment. The electricity had been shut off in this part of the estate, leaving the long, mirrored hallways bathed in the eerie, pale glow of the moonlight bleeding through the tall windows.

Clara moved silently, her socks making no sound against the hardwood floors. She checked over her shoulder constantly, terrified that Mrs. Hargrove’s sharp eyes would suddenly pierce the darkness.

She found Anna’s private sitting room at the end of the hall. The door was locked, but Clara had spent years cleaning offices; she knew how to manipulate a simple interior lock with a heavy hairpin. The mechanism clicked, and she slipped inside.

The room was perfectly preserved, like a museum exhibit of a life violently interrupted. Dresses were still hanging in the open closet. A half-read book sat on the nightstand.

Clara began to search. She didn't know exactly what she was looking for, but Noah’s drawing of the silver ring burned in her mind. Noah was terrified of Silas. Silas wore the jagged ring. If Silas was involved in the ambush, Anna might have known something before she died.

She checked the desk drawers, the pockets of the coats, and beneath the mattress. Nothing.

Frustrated, she sat on the edge of the bed. Her flashlight beam swept across the room and landed on a beautifully crafted wooden music box on the vanity. It was painted blue—Anna’s favorite color.

Clara walked over and opened the lid. A tiny ballerina spun to a slow, melancholic tune. But the music sounded slightly muffled, distorted. Clara looked closer. The velvet lining at the bottom of the box was slightly raised.

Prying the velvet up with her fingernail, Clara found a false bottom. Nestled inside was a small, black USB drive and a folded piece of stationery.

Clara’s hands shook as she unfolded the paper. It was a rushed, frantic scrawl.

Dominic - If you are reading this, I didn't make it to the dinner. Silas is working with the Moreno cartel. He’s been laundering your freight money through his own accounts for two years. He knows I found the ledgers. He knows I’m going to tell you tonight. He threatened Noah. I put the digital copies of the ledgers and the audio recording of his threat on this drive. Please, Dom. Protect our son. - Anna.

Clara stopped breathing.

The ambush hadn't been a random cartel hit. It was an assassination orchestrated by Silas to cover up his treason. Silas had ordered the black SUV to run Anna’s car off the road. And Noah—little, silent, traumatized Noah—had seen the man with the jagged silver ring pull his dying mother from the wreckage to ensure the job was done.

That was why Noah bit the nannies. That was why he threw things at the guards. He was surrounded by Silas’s men inside his own home, unable to speak, desperately trying to fight off the monsters his father blindly trusted.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway.

Clara froze.

“I knew you were a nosy little rat,” a cold, sharp voice echoed from the doorway.

Clara spun around. Mrs. Hargrove stood in the threshold, holding a suppressed pistol equipped with a heavy silencer. The house manager’s elegant facade was gone, replaced by the cold, dead eyes of a cartel operative.

“Silas warned me that you were getting too close to the boy,” Mrs. Hargrove sneered, stepping into the room and locking the door behind her. “The other nannies were easy to scare off. We just had to pinch the brat a few times when Dominic wasn't looking, keep him wild, keep him unmanageable. Dominic was getting so exhausted, he was ready to send the boy to an institution in Switzerland. But you... you had to play the savior.”

Clara gripped the USB drive tightly in her fist, hiding it behind her back. “You’ve been torturing a child. You helped kill his mother.”

“It’s just business, Clara,” Hargrove said, raising the gun. “Silas is taking over the Vale empire tonight. Dominic is at the warehouse meeting right now. He won't be coming back. And unfortunately, you and the boy are going to have a tragic accident in the estate’s swimming pool.”

Clara’s mind raced to Tyler. Her brother’s pale face in the hospital bed. She couldn't die here. Tyler needed her. Noah needed her.

As Hargrove stepped closer, Clara grabbed the heavy wooden music box from the vanity and hurled it directly at the woman’s face.

The heavy box struck Hargrove in the nose with a sickening crunch. The gun fired, the suppressed bullet shattering the mirror behind Clara.

Clara didn't hesitate. She tackled the older woman, shoving her hard against the doorframe, and bolted out into the dark hallway, running desperately toward the south wing to save the child she had sworn to protect.
