The Birthday Humiliation That Exposed an Old Ring No One Was Ever Supposed to See Again

Emily Parker never saw Chloe Bennett's foot until it was too late.

Her shoe caught against Chloe's polished heel, and the serving tray lurched out of her hands. Glass shattered across the marble floor just as her body slammed into the towering birthday cake in the middle of the ballroom. Frosting exploded over her face, soaked her hair, and stained the plain black uniform she had ironed before dawn.

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

Then laughter swept through the room.

Not awkward laughter.

Not nervous laughter.

Real laughter.

People covered their mouths while smiling anyway. Someone actually applauded.

Emily stayed where she had fallen, one hand pressed against the cold marble. Buttercream clung to her eyelashes, making everything blurry. She heard expensive shoes shuffle closer before she could wipe her eyes.

"Oh," Chloe said with a crooked smile. "Oops... too clumsy?"

Another ripple of laughter spread among the guests.

Emily looked up slowly.

Chloe Bennett stood in a glittering silver dress that probably cost more than Emily earned in three months. It was Chloe's twenty-fifth birthday, and every important family in the city had gathered inside the Bennett estate to celebrate.

Emily had almost declined the catering shift.

Rent had answered for her.

She pushed herself upright, breathing carefully through the embarrassment burning in her chest.

"Why would you do that?" she asked quietly.

May you like

Chloe tilted her head.

"Because you forgot your place."
