Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The glass of the front door exploded inward in a storm of jagged, lethal shards. The heavy velvet curtains tore under the barrage of bullets, shredding like paper. I dropped behind the solid oak and steel reinforced counter, covering my head as the woodwork above me splintered and cracked.

Sofia screamed, curling into a tight, terrified ball beside me, covering her ears.

I waited for the gunfire to pause—the inevitable three-second window when tactical shooters reloaded. When the deafening noise finally ceased, I popped up from behind the counter, leveled the shotgun at the massive, shadowed figure stepping through the ruined doorway, and pulled the trigger.

The blast was deafening in the enclosed space. The man was thrown violently backward, crashing onto the icy sidewalk outside.

"She's armed! The bitch is armed!" someone yelled from the street.

I pumped the shotgun, ejecting the smoking red shell, my heart hammering a furious, icy rhythm against my ribs. I wasn't just surviving; I was fighting. I was defending the territory my father had built, and I was defending the ring that held the key to the entire city's underworld.

Suddenly, a massive, black armored SUV roared down the narrow street, tires smoking as it slammed violently into the side of the sedan Ruggero's men had arrived in. The impact was catastrophic, crushing the sedan against the brick wall of the opposite building.

The doors of the SUV flew open. Maso Greco stepped out.

He didn't look like an alarmed mountain anymore. He looked like an apex predator unleashed. He raised a heavy assault rifle and laid down a withering wall of suppressive fire, forcing the remaining three of Ruggero's men to dive for cover in the alleyway.

"Signora!" Maso roared over the gunfire, moving rapidly toward the shop, using the armored door of his SUV as a shield. "Move! We have to go now!"

I didn't hesitate. I grabbed Sofia by the collar of her oversized coat and hauled her to her feet. "Run!" I yelled.

I grabbed the ring from the vice, shoved it deep into the pocket of my coat, and bolted through the shattered doorway, keeping my head low. Maso provided cover fire, his face grim and terrifying, until Sofia and I were thrown into the back seat of the armored vehicle.

Maso slammed the doors, jumped into the driver's seat, and slammed the accelerator to the floor. The heavy SUV tore down the street, leaving the smoking wreckage of the shop behind us.

"You're late, Maso," I gasped, my chest heaving as the adrenaline began to crash, leaving my hands shaking violently.

Maso glanced at me in the rearview mirror, his dark eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound respect. He looked at the shotgun resting across my knees, then at the tactical vest over my plain clothes.

"With all due respect, Signora," Maso grunted, taking a sharp corner at sixty miles an hour. "It looks like you had it handled."

"Where is Alessandro?" I demanded, the reality of the situation rapidly crashing down on me. "Ruggero's men said he was dead."

"He isn't dead," Maso replied grimly, confirming my instinct. "But he's trapped. Ruggero launched a massive coordinated assault the moment you left the estate last night. He had half the captains in his pocket. They locked down the perimeter. Alessandro is pinned in the main study with a dozen loyal men. They are outnumbered five to one. Ruggero is trying to starve him out, waiting for his men to retrieve the ring from you."

"Why didn't Alessandro tell me?" I asked, the betrayal still burning hot in my veins. "Why did he let me think..."

"Because if you knew, you would have acted differently," Maso said quietly. "Ruggero watches everything. If Alessandro had shown you any extra attention, any fear, Ruggero would have known you held the master key. Alessandro humiliated you to make you look irrelevant. He made you look like a discarded, emotional wife, so Ruggero wouldn't target you immediately. It was the only way to get the ring out of the house."

I stared out the reinforced, tinted window at the blurring city streets. The cold, mechanical logic of his strategy was staggering. He had broken my heart to save my life, and in doing so, he had saved his empire. But he had made the fatal mistake of assuming I was just a vessel. He assumed I would sit in the jewelry shop and cry until his men came to retrieve the asset.

He had forgotten whose daughter I was.

"Maso," I said, my voice hardening, the cold, calculating tactical mindset of the Bellini bloodline fully taking over. "Where are we going?"

"To a safe house," Maso replied. "My orders are to keep you and the ring secure until Alessandro breaks out."

"No," I said flatly.

Maso blinked, looking at me in the mirror again. "Signora, it's not a request. It's a protocol."

"I don't care about his protocols, Maso," I said, leaning forward, racking another shell into the shotgun for emphasis. "Ruggero has Alessandro pinned. Ruggero wants the ring. So, we are going to give it to him."

Maso slammed on the brakes, the heavy SUV skidding to a halt in an abandoned industrial park. He turned around in his seat, looking at me like I had lost my mind. "You want to hand over the syndicate to the man trying to kill your husband?"

"I want to lure Ruggero into a trap," I corrected him, my eyes burning with a fierce, absolute resolve. "My father didn't just build the micro-vault in this ring. He built the physical vaults where Ruggero stores his emergency cash reserves. I know the architecture of this city's underworld better than any captain in your syndicate. Take me to the primary holding facility at the Navy Yard. We are going to end this war today."
