Chapter 1 - The Footsteps Behind Her

Lily could barely breathe.

But she crawled.

One inch.

Then another.

Her knees scraped against the marble, leaving faint streaks of blood behind her. Pain burned through her abdomen where Serena Montigue’s heel had struck her, but Lily kept reaching for the fourteen-month-old boy lying near the foot of the staircase.

Ethan Blackwood’s injured arm hung at an unnatural angle. His small face had turned from red to a frightening purple, and his screams were fading into weak, broken sounds.

That terrified Lily more than the crying.

She had cared for Ethan every day for six months. She knew his hungry cry, his tired cry, and the indignant little howl he made when someone took away his wooden blocks.

This sound was different.

He was slipping into shock.

“Please,” Lily gasped. “He needs a doctor.”

Serena stepped between them.

Her ivory heel pressed down on Lily’s hand.

“He needs discipline.”

“He’s a baby.”

“He is Victor Blackwood’s son. He cannot grow up weak.”

Lily stared at the woman above her.

At charity galas, Serena appeared elegant and compassionate. She wore diamonds, donated to children’s hospitals, and smiled beside Victor for photographers. Society magazines called her the woman who had softened Chicago’s most feared man.

But there was nothing soft in her eyes now.

Ethan moved his uninjured hand toward Lily.

“Li… Li…”

The small sound broke something inside her.

Lily pulled her hand free and dragged herself forward.

Serena raised her foot again.

Then a sound came from the dark corridor behind them.

One heavy footstep.

A pause.

Then another.

Measured.

Unhurried.

Terrifying.

Serena froze.

Lily stopped moving.

The footsteps continued through the shadowed passage connecting the foyer to Victor’s private study.

Victor Blackwood stepped into the light.

Rain darkened the shoulders of his charcoal overcoat. Two security men stood behind him, but he did not need guards to make the enormous mansion feel suddenly smaller.

Victor was the man prosecutors feared naming in open court. Politicians returned his calls before their own families’. Men who laughed at threats lowered their eyes when Victor Blackwood entered a room.

But Lily had never seen him look the way he did now.

His gaze moved first to Ethan.

Then to the child’s injured arm.

Then to Lily bleeding on the floor.

Finally, his eyes settled on Serena’s heel hovering above Lily’s body.

“Put your foot down,” he said.

Victor did not raise his voice.

He did not need to.

Serena stepped backward immediately.

“Victor,” she said, changing her expression with astonishing speed. “Thank God you’re here. Something terrible happened.”

Victor crossed the foyer and knelt beside his son.

Ethan made a faint, painful sound.

Victor’s hands—hands rumored to have ordered men killed without trembling—shook when he touched the baby’s cheek.

“Call Dr. Morelli,” he ordered.

His security chief, Adrian Cole, already had his phone out.

“Tell him we are coming now.”

Victor removed his overcoat and carefully wrapped it around Ethan without moving the injured arm. Then he looked at Lily.

“Can you stand?”

She tried.

Pain folded her forward.

Adrian moved to help her, but Serena rushed between them.

“She attacked me,” Serena said. “She became hysterical and tried to tear Ethan from my arms. He fell because of her.”

Lily stared at her.

Even now, Serena lied with perfect composure.

Victor rose with Ethan against his chest.

“What happened?” he asked Lily.

Serena answered first.

“You cannot trust her. She has become obsessed with Ethan. I warned you she was unstable.”

Victor’s gaze never left Lily.

“I asked her.”

Lily pressed one hand against her injured stomach.

“Ethan was crying in the nursery. Serena grabbed him by the arm and dragged him into the foyer. I tried to stop her. She kicked me.”

“That is a lie,” Serena snapped.

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

A security camera was mounted above the entrance.

Adrian checked the mansion’s surveillance system on his phone.

“The foyer camera went offline forty-seven minutes ago.”

Serena’s fear faded.

She almost smiled.

“So there is no proof.”

Lily reached into the torn pocket of her uniform.

Her fingers closed around a small digital recorder.

“There is,” she whispered.

Serena’s face changed.

Lily held up the device.

“I started recording when she entered the nursery.”

Serena lunged.

Adrian caught her before she reached Lily.

“Give me that!” Serena screamed.

The elegant mask disappeared completely.

Victor passed Ethan carefully to another guard, then took the recorder from Lily.

He pressed PLAY.

At first, there was only Ethan crying.

Then Serena’s voice filled the foyer.

“If the child is declared incapacitated before the wedding, Victor will be too distracted to examine the trust.”

A man answered through the recording.

“Make the injuries look like the nanny caused them.”

Victor became utterly still.

Lily recognized the stillness.

It was not confusion.

It was the moment before violence.

Victor looked at Serena.

“Who is the man?”

She stopped struggling.

The recording continued.

“Once you become Ethan’s legal stepmother,” the man said, “the trustees can be pressured into giving you emergency control.”

Serena replied, “And Victor?”

A pause followed.

Then the man said, “After the wedding, Victor will have an accident.”

No one spoke.

Rain tapped softly against the mansion windows.

Victor replayed the final sentence.

Serena’s face had gone white.

“You do not understand,” she whispered.

Victor turned to Adrian.

“Take her to the east sitting room. Search her. Do not allow her near a phone.”

Serena fought the guards.

“Victor, that recording was manipulated! She wants you. She has always wanted your money.”

Victor looked down at Lily’s bloodied knees.

“She was crawling toward my child while you stood on her hand.”

Serena’s mouth closed.

“Dr. Morelli is ready,” Adrian said.

Victor lifted Ethan again.

As he carried his son toward the door, Lily forced herself upright.

“I’m coming.”

“You need treatment too,” Victor said.

“That is why I’m coming.”

At the private clinic, doctors confirmed Ethan’s upper arm was fractured. He also had bruised ribs, dehydration, and traces of a sedative in his blood.

Lily had severe abdominal bruising and a cracked rib.

When the doctor told Victor that Ethan would recover, the feared mafia boss closed his eyes and gripped the edge of a table.

Only then did Lily see the father beneath the legend.

An hour later, Victor entered her treatment room.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

Lily opened a hidden folder on her phone.

Inside were photographs of old bruises, notes documenting Serena’s visits, and copies of reports Lily had tried to deliver to Victor.

“I began noticing injuries three weeks ago.”

Victor studied the evidence.

“Why did I never receive these reports?”

“Dominic Caruso stopped them.”

Victor looked up sharply.

Caruso was his oldest adviser.

“He said accusations against Serena had to pass through him,” Lily continued. “When I refused to stay quiet, he told me Chicago was dangerous for women without family.”

Victor called Adrian.

“Find Caruso.”

Five minutes later, Adrian returned with disturbing news.

Caruso’s apartment was empty.

His company phone had been abandoned.

And two million dollars had been transferred that morning into an account controlled by Serena’s family.

Victor looked toward the room where Ethan slept.

Then Lily revealed one final secret.

“The recorder isn’t the only evidence.”

Victor turned back to her.

“I hid a camera inside Ethan’s white-noise machine.”

For the first time that night, Victor looked surprised.

“What did it capture?”

Lily met his eyes.

“I don’t know yet.”

They returned to the mansion under police escort from an officer Victor trusted. Adrian removed the memory card from the nursery device and inserted it into a secure laptop.

The first recordings showed Serena entering after midnight and adding liquid to Ethan’s food.

Another showed Caruso photographing trust documents.

Then Adrian opened the final file.

Serena stood beside Ethan’s crib during a video call.

The man on the screen was not Caruso.

It was Victor’s younger brother, Julian Blackwood.

And he was telling Serena exactly how they would murder Victor after the wedding.
