Chapter 4 - The Debt Erased
Elena crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’m not alone. I have friends here.”
“I know,” Adrian said quietly. “Sarah from the bakery. Mr. Henderson who runs the pharmacy. I made sure their backgrounds were clean. I made sure everyone around you was safe.”
Elena felt a flash of anger.
“You investigated my friends?”
“I protected my family.”
“I am not your family, Adrian. Not anymore.”
The words struck him like a physical blow.
He closed his eyes, accepting the pain.
“I know.”
He took one slow step forward.
“Elena, I cut her off.”
Elena didn't need to ask who he meant.
“The night you left,” Adrian continued, his voice breaking. “I went to her house. It was a lie. She was lonely. She used my guilt to control me.”
“And you let her.”
“Yes.”
He didn't make excuses.
He didn't try to justify it.
“I walked out of her house. I blocked her number. I set up a trust for her father’s name and severed all contact. I haven’t spoken to her in seven months.”
Elena looked at him.
“Congratulations. You finally set a boundary.”
“It was too late.”
“Yes. It was.”
Adrian nodded.
He reached into his jacket pocket.
Elena tensed.
But he only pulled out a folded piece of paper.
He placed it gently on the counter between them.
“What is that?” she asked.
“Divorce papers.”
Elena stared at the document.
“I signed them,” Adrian said softly. “I gave you everything. The money, the properties, full custody. I didn't contest a single thing.”
Elena looked from the paper to his face.
“Why?”
“Because love isn’t holding someone hostage.”
A tear slipped down Adrian’s cheek.
“I spent six years making you wait for me. I made you feel second. I made you feel like you had to compete for my attention while carrying my child.”
He looked at her stomach again.
“You walked away because I failed you. I am not going to fail you again by forcing you to fight me in court.”
Elena stared at the man she had loved.
He was finally the man she had always begged him to be.
Present.
Accountable.
