Chapter 4 - The Empire He Finally Refused to Protect

Matteo’s plane never reached its destination.

Federal agents intercepted it after Dominic anonymously provided evidence connecting Matteo to the attack, the falsified hospital records, and multiple financial crimes hidden through Moretti companies.

Vincent could have handled Matteo privately.

His men expected it.

That was how the Moretti family had survived for decades.

Silence.

Fear.

Revenge.

But Vincent had already lost too much to that world.

He stood inside the estate’s private office while investigators reviewed the evidence Maria had hidden for five years.

“There are things here that will destroy us,” Dominic said.

Vincent looked at the records.

They documented bribes, shell companies, political favors, and violent orders tied not only to Matteo, but to Vincent’s own organization.

“Yes,” Vincent said.

“You are going to give them everything?”

“I am.”

“And what happens to the empire?”

Vincent thought about Lucia.

About the daughter he never knew.

About Isabelle lying in a hospital bed because men like him believed power was more valuable than life.

“Then it ends,” he said.

For the next six months, Vincent dismantled the criminal side of the Moretti network.

He cooperated through attorneys.

He surrendered financial records.

He cut ties with captains who refused to leave the violence behind.

Some called him weak.

Others called him a traitor.

But Vincent no longer cared.

Because every empire built on fear eventually required someone innocent to pay for it.

And he was finished letting that happen.

Isabelle gave birth two months later.

A little girl.

Healthy.

Loud.

Beautiful.

She had dark hair, a tiny crescent birthmark near her shoulder, and a cry powerful enough to fill the maternity floor.

Isabelle named her Lucia.

Not because Vincent asked her to.

Because she wanted her daughter to know the name of the woman whose courage and loss had shaped their lives.

Vincent stood outside the hospital room for nearly an hour before Isabelle allowed him inside.

He did not bring flowers.

He did not bring money.

He did not bring guards.

He brought only a small photograph of Lucia Moretti, smiling beneath a summer sky.

“Would you like to see her?” he asked.

Isabelle nodded.

Vincent placed the photo beside the hospital bed.

Then he looked at the newborn.

“May I hold her?”

Isabelle hesitated.

Vincent waited.

Finally, she placed baby Lucia in his arms.

The man once feared across Chicago looked down at the child and began to cry.

Not loudly.

May you like

Not dramatically.

Just quietly, like someone mourning every moment he had lost and every life he had nearly failed to protect.
