Chapter 1 - The Broken Silence

“Stop it, please! You’re breaking his arm!”

Lily’s desperate scream tore through the cavernous, cold marble foyer of the Blackwood mansion, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings and the imposing stone pillars. Outside, a heavy thunderstorm raged, but the true nightmare was unfolding right on the pristine, black-and-white checkered floor.

Baby Ethan, only eight months old, was on the cold stone, wailing with a pitch so high and broken that it barely sounded human anymore. His little body shook violently, his chest heaving as he struggled to draw breath. Standing over him was Serena Montigue, the glamorous, untouchable fiancée of Victor Blackwood. Dressed in a breathtaking, floor-length white silk gown that clung perfectly to her model-like figure, she looked like a vision of angelic perfection. But the contorted, ugly sneer on her face revealed the absolute monster lurking beneath the expensive fabric.

Serena’s manicured, diamond-studded fingers were wrapped viciously around Ethan’s tiny, fragile wrist. She was dragging the helpless infant across the marble floor like he was nothing more than a discarded rag doll, a nuisance that had interrupted her perfect, quiet afternoon. Ethan’s face had gone from a flushed, angry red to a terrifying, oxygen-deprived purple. His cries were growing weaker by the second, fading into breathless, high-pitched gasps.

“Shut this brat up!” Serena hissed, her voice dripping with venom as she yanked the baby’s arm harder. “I told you to keep him in the west wing, you useless girl! I have a fitting in an hour, and I will not have my nerves frayed by this little bastard’s whining!”

Lily, the young nanny, threw herself across the floor, her knees scraping harshly against the unyielding marble. She didn't care about the pain radiating up her legs. She didn't care about the severe, bleeding gash on her cheek where Serena’s heavy diamond ring had struck her just moments prior when she first tried to intervene. All Lily saw was the terrifying color of Ethan’s face.

“Let him go! You’re hurting him!” Lily sobbed, crawling forward and wrapping her arms around the baby’s small torso, trying to absorb the force of Serena’s pulling. “Please, Miss Montigue! He’s just hungry! Please, I’ll take him away, just let go of his arm!”

“Get your filthy hands off me, you pathetic little rat,” Serena snarled, raising her stiletto-heeled foot and kicking Lily squarely in the ribs.

Lily gasped, the air knocked from her lungs, but she refused to let go of the baby. She curled her body over Ethan, forming a human shield against the beautiful, wicked woman standing above them. Blood from Lily’s split lip dripped onto her crisp, dark blue nanny uniform, staining the white apron. She was terrified, a civilian trapped in a world of wealth and unimaginable danger, but the maternal instinct burning inside her overpowered her fear. She would die before she let this woman break this child.

“I will have you thrown out on the street,” Serena threatened, leaning down and grabbing a fistful of Lily’s dark hair, yanking her head back. “I am the future Queen of the Blackwood syndicate. When Victor makes me his wife, the first thing I’m doing is burying you in the woods for defying me.”

“He’s… he’s his son,” Lily choked out, tears streaming down her bruised face. “How can you…”

“He is a complication,” Serena interrupted coldly. “A remnant of a dead woman. Victor only needs me. Now, give me the brat so I can lock him in the dark until he learns to be quiet.”

Serena raised her hand, prepared to strike the helpless nanny once more.

But the blow never landed.

The heavy, solid oak double doors of the mansion’s grand entrance suddenly swung open with a resounding, thunderous crash. The storm winds howled into the foyer, but the drop in temperature had nothing to do with the weather.

Victor Blackwood had returned home early.

He stood in the doorway, a towering, terrifying silhouette of broad shoulders and immaculate tailoring. He wore a sharp, charcoal-grey three-piece suit, his dark tie perfectly knotted, but his aura was that of a predator stepping onto a battlefield. Behind him, two massive, stone-faced bodyguards instantly halted, the air around them turning incredibly dense and suffocating.

Victor’s dark, piercing eyes swept the scene. He took in the grand checkerboard floor. He saw the beautiful white dress of his fiancée. And then, his gaze locked onto the floor. He saw his infant son, crying weakly on the cold marble. And he saw Lily, the quiet, timid nanny he had hired a month ago, bleeding, bruised, and using her own body as a shield to protect his flesh and blood.

The silence that fell over the foyer was absolute, save for the weak whimpers of the baby. It was the heavy, suffocating silence that always preceded an execution in the underworld. Victor stepped into the mansion, his polished shoes clicking against the marble.

Every single step sounded like a death knell. The true king of the Blackwood syndicate was home, and the reign of terror in his shadows had just been dragged into the light.
