Chapter 2 - The Toast to the Future

Graham tapped a silver spoon against his champagne flute. The sharp, ringing sound cut through the ambient noise, and the string quartet immediately stopped playing. Four hundred faces turned toward the center of the room.
"Friends, colleagues, and esteemed board members," Graham projected, his deep voice echoing off the marble pillars. "Tonight, we celebrate not just the success of Carlisle Meridian, but a bold new direction. I am thrilled to announce an exclusive, groundbreaking partnership with Vance Investment Group."
Sloane beamed, leaning her head against his shoulder. It was her brother’s firm. Graham was leveraging my family’s empire to enrich his mistress's bloodline.
"This portrait," Graham continued, gesturing grandly to the massive painting above him, "represents exactly what we are building. A fresh start. The future, covering the past. To moving forward!"
"Before we drink to the future," I said.
My voice was not loud, but the absolute, chilling authority in my tone froze the room instantly. I stepped forward, the black velvet of my gown sweeping across the floor. The board members of Carlisle Meridian shifted uncomfortably.
"Graham, you promised not to oppose this announcement," he hissed through a forced smile, his eyes flashing with sudden warning.

"I promised I wouldn't stop you from making it," I corrected him smoothly, stopping ten feet away. "But before you leverage Hawthorne assets for a new partnership, there is a small issue of ownership that needs to be clarified."
I turned my gaze toward the back of the room, where my Director of Security was standing quietly near the main doors. I gave him a single, barely perceptible nod.
