Chapter 6 - Susan’s New Beginning

Susan returned to work slowly.
Not at Carter Industrial.
She joined a nonprofit financial-advisory organization that helped women rebuild after divorce, financial control, and family loss.
At first, she worked only part time.
Then she began leading workshops.
Women came to her with hidden debt, empty accounts, controlling husbands, and the shame of believing they should have known better.
Susan always told them the same thing.
“Trusting someone does not make you foolish. But protecting yourself after they betray that trust makes you strong.”
Her work gave her a reason to wake up.
So did the small house she rented near the pine woods outside The Woodlands.
It was not grand.
But it was hers.
She planted rosemary in the garden because she still loved the smell.
She lit cinnamon candles in November because grief did not belong to Franklin.
The memories of the children she lost were hers too.
One afternoon, Susan received a letter from Clare.
Inside was a photograph of baby Lily, wrapped in a pink blanket.
The note read:
I am sorry for the pain I brought into your life. I know I cannot undo it. I am trying to make sure my daughter grows up with honesty.
Susan held the photograph for a long time.
Then she wrote back.
Lily is innocent. I hope she grows up surrounded by people who choose her clearly.
It was not friendship.
It was not complete healing.

But it was compassion without surrender.
And Susan finally understood that she could be kind without allowing anyone back into the place where they hurt her.
