Chapter 5 - The Queen's Terms

"You're washing dishes," Marcus said, his voice flat, though a muscle ticked violently in his jaw.

"I'm working," Vera corrected, her voice entirely devoid of fear. She met his ash-gray gaze with an unshakeable, chilling calm. "It turns out my labor has actual value when I'm the one cashing the check, Marcus."

Marcus stepped closer, ignoring the elderly cook watching from the kitchen window. "The syndicate is bleeding out. My managers don't know who to pay. The Moretti family is moving on our docks because the logistics framework is frozen."

"Then I suggest you learn how to read my ledgers," Vera said evenly, turning back to wipe down the counter. "Because I left them neatly organized on your desk."

Marcus reached out, his large hand wrapping gently around her wrist—not with the crushing force of a boss demanding obedience, but with the desperate restraint of a man holding onto a sinking anchor.

"Come home, Vera," he murmured, the cold authority entirely stripped from his tone. "Name your price. Take half the empire. Take all of it. Just stop hiding in a diner."

Vera looked down at his hand, then slowly lifted her eyes to meet his. The frightened girl who had fled into the rainy Boston night four weeks ago was gone. In her place stood a woman who knew her worth to the very last decimal.

"I'm not hiding, Marcus," Vera whispered, pulling her wrist free with quiet dignity. "I'm building. If you want me back in your world, you won't get me as your wife, and you won't get me as your assistant."

Marcus held her gaze, recognizing the exact moment the power dynamic shifted permanently between them. "How then?"

"As a partner," Vera said, her voice cutting through the hum of the diner refrigerator like a blade. "Equal shares. Equal control. Or you can walk out that door right now and watch your empire burn."
