Part 1: The Shattered Glass

The heavy leather briefcase slipped from his grip, hitting the marble floor with a deafening thud that broke the suffocating tension in the room. He didn’t blink. He didn’t even seem to breathe. Every step he took toward the shivering girl felt like walking through a waking nightmare.
"Eleanor?" he choked out, his voice a broken rasp. He dropped to his knees right into the puddle of dirty bleach water, completely ignoring how it soaked into the fabric of his bespoke suit.
The girl flinched. She instinctively raised her raw, red hands to protect her face—a tragic, ingrained reflex that sent a physical blade of agony straight through the billionaire's chest.

"Darling, listen to me," the elegant woman on the armchair suddenly stammered. The facade of her aristocratic grace was crumbling rapidly, the crystal wine glass shaking violently in her grip. "It’s not what it looks like! She was just... she insisted on helping out. You know how rebellious and ungrateful teenagers can be, she needed some discipline—"
"Discipline?" The word slipped from his lips like a venomous curse. He ignored his wife entirely, gently taking his daughter's bruised, chemically-burned hands into his own. He felt the coarse, rough texture of skin that had been subjected to months of grueling manual labor while he was thousands of miles away signing multi-million-dollar contracts. The contrast between his daughter's broken, bleeding hands and his wife's pristine, manicured fingers holding a glass of expensive wine was an unforgivable truth.
