Chapter 9 - The Daughter Who Changed Him

Isabelle gave birth in July.

A healthy baby girl with dark hair, tiny hands, and a fierce cry that filled the hospital room.

Isabelle named her Lucia.

Nathaniel waited outside the maternity ward for six hours.

He did not demand entry.

He did not call lawyers.

He did not invoke his name.

When Meredith finally came out, she looked at him.

“Isabelle will let you meet her.”

Nathaniel entered quietly.

Lucia slept against Isabelle’s chest.

Nathaniel stopped near the door.

“She is beautiful,” he whispered.

“Yes,” Isabelle said.

“Can I hold her?”

Isabelle watched him for a long moment.

Then she nodded.

“Support her head.”

Nathaniel took Lucia into his arms.

The baby stirred, then settled against him.

His tears fell onto the blanket.

“I am sorry,” he whispered.

Isabelle’s voice was tired but steady.

“She cannot understand those words yet.”

“I know.”

“She will understand whether you mean them.”

Nathaniel looked down at his daughter.

“I will make sure she does.”

He did not ask Isabelle to come home.

He did not ask for a second chance.

He sat in the chair beside her bed until dawn, holding Lucia carefully and learning that the smallest person in the room had already changed the entire meaning of his life.
