Chapter 7: The Price of the Light

The assault began the very next morning, and it did not come in the form of bullets.

Dante Calibri understood that violence would only trigger an immediate federal response. Instead, he weaponized the very system Aloyio and Martina had used to destroy his uncle. He used corporate sabotage.

Martina was sitting in the small, sunlit office above the Rusty Anchor—the apartment Aloyio had given her—reviewing the monthly budget. Sophia was sitting on the sofa, her laptop open, tears of frustration shining in her eyes.

"They froze it," Sophia said, her voice shaking. "The entire operational account for the Lorie Initiative. The bank cited a 'suspicious activity report' regarding our primary donor."

Martina closed her ledger. "Who filed the report?"

"An anonymous shell corporation flagged our initial seed money as unverified offshore capital," Sophia explained, frantically scrolling through the legal jargon on her screen. "They legally mandated a ninety-day freeze while the IRS investigates. Martina, we have scholarship checks supposed to go out to twenty students tomorrow. If they don't get them, they can't pay their tuition. They’ll be dropped from their programs."

Martina stood up, pacing the hardwood floor. Dante was starving them out. He was attacking the very foundation of the good they were trying to put into the world.

The door to the apartment opened. Aloyio walked in. He looked exhausted, his tie loosened, a dark shadow of stubble along his jawline.

"It’s not just the foundation," Aloyio said, reading the tension in the room. He poured himself a glass of water from the kitchen island. "Dante bought the commercial leases on the three warehouses my logistics company uses. He served us with eviction notices at dawn, citing fabricated structural violations. He’s paralyzing my fleet."

"He wants the shipping routes," Martina said, crossing her arms. "If your trucks can't load, your contracts go into default. The clients will drop you, and Dante’s shell companies will swoop in to pick up the pieces."

"It’s a classic squeeze," Aloyio murmured, his knuckles turning white around the glass. "He knows I can't retaliate physically without violating my federal immunity agreement. He is using my redemption against me."

Sophia looked between them, her anxiety spiking. "What do we do? We can't let him destroy the scholarships."

Aloyio set the glass down. He looked at Martina, the darkness pooling in his eyes. The reformed businessman was fading, and the ruthless syndicate boss was clawing his way back to the surface.

"I can end this," Aloyio said quietly. "Tonight. I still have men who are loyal to the old ways. I can make Dante Calibri disappear. The police won't find a body, and the corporate attacks will evaporate by morning."

Martina stared at him. The offer hung in the air, heavy and seductive. It would be so easy to let him do it. To let the monster out of the cage just one last time to protect the people she loved.

But Martina walked across the room, stopping inches from him. She reached up, placing her hands flat against his chest. She could feel his heart hammering, wild and desperate.

"No," Martina said softly, but with absolute conviction.

"Martina, he is threatening your sister's work. He is threatening your peace," Aloyio pleaded, his voice ragged. "Let me protect you."

"If you murder him, you become exactly what you spent the last two years trying to escape," Martina replied, her eyes locking onto his. "You told me you wanted to build a life in the light. You don't get to run back to the dark the second things get hard."

"Then how do we fight him?" Aloyio asked, the frustration bleeding through. "He is using the law as a weapon."

"Then we use a bigger weapon," Martina smiled, a cold, terrifyingly brilliant expression that made Aloyio’s breath catch. "We use the truth. Sophia, grab your laptop. We are going to audit Dante Calibri."
