Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of Love

A year after the trial, Penelope met Julian Cross at a museum fundraiser.
Julian was not flashy.
He did not arrive surrounded by assistants or speak loudly enough for everyone to hear him. He was an architect who had helped design several of the new affordable housing buildings on the waterfront project.
He wore a simple charcoal suit and carried a sketchbook beneath one arm.
When Penelope mentioned that she liked the building’s windows, he did not explain architecture to her.
He asked what she saw in them.
“They make the place feel open,” she said.
Julian nodded.
“That was the goal. People deserve light.”
It was such a small moment.
But Penelope remembered it.
Over the following months, they met for coffee, museum exhibits, and long walks beside Lake Michigan. Julian never asked why she wore old shoes. He never seemed surprised when she knew more about business than he did.
He listened.
When he disagreed, he said so respectfully.
When she needed space, he gave it.
When she spoke about Christopher, Julian did not try to compete with a past he did not create.
“I do not need you to forget what happened,” he told her one evening. “I just want you to know it does not get to decide everything that happens next.”
Penelope looked at him across the table.
“You make things sound simple.”
“They are not simple,” Julian said. “They are just possible.”

A future built around peace.
