Chapter 6 - The Man Who Started Telling the Truth
The investigation lasted months.
Ambrose’s lawyers advised him to deny everything.
His former partners urged him to blame subordinates.
Some board members offered quiet deals if he protected their names.
But then Ambrose thought about Evelyn.
He thought about the day she might ask who he was.
He thought about having to explain why he had chosen pride over truth.
So he cooperated.
He gave investigators access to documents Jacqueline did not have.
He named executives who had helped create false accounts.
He admitted that he had benefited from the schemes.
His public statement was short.
“I used my position to protect myself instead of the people who trusted me. I betrayed my wife, my family, my employees, and the communities my foundation claimed to serve. I will accept the consequences.”
The statement shocked everyone.
It did not save him.
He lost control of Blackwell Holdings.
He sold properties.
He resigned from the foundation.
He paid restitution into housing and environmental recovery funds.
But the investigation did protect employees who had been pressured into silence.
And it uncovered enough evidence to return several buildings to the communities Ambrose had tried to displace.
Jacqueline watched the press conference from her home.
Evelyn slept against her chest.
Naomi stood nearby.
“Do you believe him?” Naomi asked.
Jacqueline looked at the television.
“I believe he is finally afraid of the truth.”
