Chapter 3 - The Letter He Ignored

Ryan did not leave that night.

He slept on the couch without asking to come upstairs.

At 2:00 a.m., Noah woke crying.

Before Ryan could move, I lifted my son and carried him into the nursery.

A few minutes later, Ryan appeared at the door.

“Can I help?”

I looked at him over Noah’s head.

“You do not know how.”

“Teach me.”

The words were quiet.

Not demanding.

Not defensive.

But I was too tired to be moved by them.

“You had nine months to learn,” I said.

Ryan stood in the doorway while I fed Noah.

The nursery was the room he had promised to build himself. He had painted the walls, assembled the crib, and spent an entire Saturday arguing about whether the rocking chair should go near the window.

Now he looked around as though the room belonged to strangers.

On the shelf sat a small framed letter.

Ryan noticed it.

“What is that?”

I followed his gaze.

“It is the first letter I wrote Noah.”

He picked it up carefully.

The letter was dated two months before Noah was born.

Dear Noah,

Your dad is excited to meet you. He talks about teaching you baseball, building you a treehouse, and showing you how to make pancakes on Saturday mornings.

I hope he always remembers how much you are loved before you even arrive.

Love,

Mom

Ryan read it once.

Then again.

His face broke.

“I was excited,” he whispered.

“I know.”

“I meant all of that.”

“I know,” I said again. “That is what makes it sad.”

He sat on the floor outside the nursery while Noah finally fell asleep.

“I ended things with Melissa,” he said.

I looked at him.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“Did she know you were coming home to a newborn?”

Ryan hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Did she know I was in labor?”

His silence answered.

I nodded slowly.

“She knew,” I said. “And you still stayed.”

Ryan covered his face.

“I hate myself for it.”

I placed Noah in the crib.

Then I turned toward him.

“Good,” I said. “But do not make me comfort you for becoming someone I warned you not to be.”

He looked up.

May you like

I had never spoken to him that way before.

Perhaps that was why he finally listened.
