Chapter 9: Checkmate

The screen flashed green. Upload Complete.

Ava pulled the flash drive from the server and dropped it into her clutch, turning to face the billionaire with absolute, terrifying calm.

"Upload?" Sterling’s brow furrowed, confusion breaking his polished exterior. "Where did you just upload my data?"

"I didn't just copy it to this drive, Elias," Ava said, her voice steady and echoing in the hum of the server room. "I just sent the unencrypted ledger directly to the FBI's cyber-crime division, the local District Attorney, and the inbox of every major investigative journalist in this city. You aren't just framing my brother. You’ve been embezzling from your own investors to fund these illegal evictions."

Sterling’s face drained of color, turning a sickly, ashen gray. "You’re lying. The firewall—"

"I am an accountant," Ava interrupted coldly. "I don't break firewalls with brute force. I walk through the backdoors you left open when you tried to hide your tax evasion. Your empire is over."

"Seize her!" Sterling screamed at his guards, all pretenses of civility completely shattered. "Get that drive!"

The two guards lunged forward.

Before they could cross the room, a shadow detached itself from the hallway. Gabriel Reed stepped through the doorway, moving with a lethal, terrifying grace that Ava had almost forgotten he possessed.

He didn't use a weapon. He didn't need one. Gabriel grabbed the first guard by the lapels of his suit, using the man's own momentum to slam him brutally into the reinforced steel of the server racks. The guard crumpled instantly.

The second guard reached for his gun, but Gabriel was faster. A precise, devastating strike to the throat dropped the man to his knees, gasping for air.

Silence fell over the room, broken only by the hum of the servers and the groans of the guards.

Gabriel straightened his tuxedo jacket. He didn't even look out of breath. He turned his dark, furious eyes on Elias Sterling.

Sterling stumbled backward, terror finally bleeding into his arrogant features. "Reed. Listen to me. We can make a deal. Name your price. I have offshore accounts—"

"You threatened her," Gabriel’s voice was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated in Ava’s chest. He took a slow step toward the billionaire. "You put your hands on her life. There is no amount of money in the world that can buy you a reprieve from me."

Gabriel reached out, his hand wrapping around Sterling’s throat, lifting the man onto his toes.

"Gabriel, stop!" Ava shouted, stepping forward.

Gabriel’s grip didn't loosen. His eyes were entirely black, consumed by the violent, protective rage that had ruled his past life. He was ready to kill Sterling. He was ready to throw away his redemption to ensure Ava was safe.

"Gabriel, look at me!" Ava demanded, grabbing his forearm.

He didn't move.

"If you do this, you become exactly what you were," Ava pleaded, her voice cracking with fierce emotion. "You prove that power is only about violence. I didn't send those files to the FBI so you could murder him in a basement. Let the law take him. Do not let him turn you back into a monster. Choose better. Choose me."

Gabriel’s chest heaved. The violent tension in his arm trembled beneath her touch. He looked at Ava’s face, seeing the desperate, unwavering belief she had in him.

Slowly, agonizingly, Gabriel released his grip.

Sterling collapsed to the floor, coughing and gasping for air, clutching his bruised throat.

Gabriel stepped back, running a shaking hand through his dark hair. He looked at Ava, a profound vulnerability breaking through his dangerous exterior. "I almost lost it."

"But you didn't," Ava said softly, slipping her hand into his.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder as they echoed through the city streets. The FBI had received the files. The raid was beginning.

Ava looked down at the ruined billionaire on the floor.

"You thought ordinary people could be used without consequence," Ava told Sterling. "You were wrong."

She turned and walked out of the server room, holding Gabriel’s hand, leaving the wreckage of the corrupt empire behind her.
