Chapter 8 - The Serpent’s RetreatWhen the king falls, the court scrambles. But the mistress always tries to run.

By noon on Friday, the financial districts of Manhattan were entirely consumed by the scandal. The arrest of Adriano Falcone was broadcast across every major network. The stock of Falcone Strategic Logistics had been halted by the SEC, but the gray-market valuations were in freefall. The empire was paralyzed.

Celia Moretti did not wait for the dust to settle. She knew exactly what the activation of the Dead Man’s Switch meant. It meant that the federal authorities were already auditing every single shell company connected to the Falcone name.

At 1:15 p.m., Celia sat in the VIP lounge of a private wealth management bank on Wall Street. She wore a dark trench coat, oversize sunglasses, and a frantic, terrified expression. She was tapping her manicured nails against the mahogany table, waiting for the senior branch manager.

She needed to liquidate Moretti Holdings Group immediately. She needed the thirty million dollars in liquid capital wired to a non-extradition offshore account before the DOJ froze her assets. She had her private jet fueled and waiting on the tarmac at Teterboro Airport.

The heavy glass doors of the VIP lounge clicked open.

Celia stood up abruptly, ripping off her sunglasses. "Finally! I told you I need the wire transfers executed within the hour—"

She stopped. The blood drained entirely from her face.

It was not the senior branch manager who walked into the room.

It was Saraphina.

She wore the same sharp, tailored black maternity suit she had worn to the boardroom. She looked immaculate, untouched by the chaos she had unleashed upon the city. Walking right behind her was Julian Vance, his face a mask of cold, calculated precision, holding a leather briefcase.

"Saraphina," Celia breathed, stumbling backward until her calves hit the edge of the leather sofa. "What are you doing here? You can't be here."

"I can be wherever my money is, Celia," Saraphina said smoothly, walking into the room and taking the seat across from where Celia had been sitting. She crossed her legs, resting her hands protectively over her swollen stomach. "And right now, you are attempting to wire my money to an account in the Cayman Islands."

"It is my holding group!" Celia shrieked, panic clawing at her throat. "The transfers were filed! Adriano signed them!"

"Adriano forged them," Julian corrected, stepping forward and placing his briefcase on the table. He snapped the locks open. "And the SEC has already issued a blanket injunction against Moretti Holdings Group. The bank manager you were waiting for? He is currently in the lobby speaking with two federal agents."

Celia let out a choked, desperate sound. She lunged forward, slamming her hands onto the table.

"You bitch," Celia hissed, the polished, elegant mistress entirely replaced by a cornered rat. "You think you’ve won? Adriano told me everything about you. He told me how weak you are. How pathetic. He said you spent the last six months crying in the nursery while he was in my bed. You think destroying the company makes you powerful? It just makes you a bitter, lonely woman."

Saraphina did not flinch. She did not raise her voice. She looked at Celia with the clinical, detached pity one might reserve for an insect trapped in a glass jar.

"You thought Adriano was a prize," Saraphina said softly. "You thought you were stealing a billionaire. You thought you were inheriting a kingdom. But you didn't look at the blueprints, Celia."

Saraphina gestured to Julian. He pulled a single, thick document from the briefcase and slid it across the table.

"What is this?" Celia whispered, refusing to touch it.

"That is a forensic debt analysis of Moretti Holdings Group," Julian explained, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "When Adriano funneled the stolen equity into your company, he didn't just transfer assets. To avoid raising red flags with the IRS, he cross-collateralized the transfer with massive amounts of toxic corporate debt from his own failing real estate ventures."

Celia’s eyes widened in sheer horror. She slowly picked up the document, her hands shaking violently.

"He told you that you were receiving thirty million dollars in clean equity," Saraphina continued, her voice dropping to a freezing pitch. "What you actually received was fifty million dollars in leveraged corporate debt. You didn't steal my fortune, Celia. You legally absorbed Adriano's liabilities."

"No," Celia gasped, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she read the numbers. "No, he wouldn't do that to me. He loves me."

"He loves himself," Saraphina corrected effortlessly. "He used you as a financial human shield. Because you are the sole signatory on Moretti Holdings Group, the federal government isn't going to seize your assets, Celia. They are going to seize your personal bank accounts, your properties, your cars, and your future earnings to pay off the debt you willingly signed for."

Celia collapsed onto the sofa, sobbing uncontrollably. The reality of her situation crushed her. She was not flying to the Caymans. She was utterly, permanently bankrupt.

"You are going to spend the rest of your life paying off the price of my husband's ego," Saraphina said, standing up. She looked down at the weeping woman. "I hope the champagne last night was worth it."

She turned and walked out of the VIP lounge, leaving the mistress drowning in the ruins of the castle she had tried to steal.
