Chapter 13 - The Gala of Glass and LiesThe Waldorf Astoria grand ballroom was a masterpiece of crystal, gold, and sheer, intoxicating wealth.

It was the annual Vale Meridian Gala, an event I had meticulously planned to celebrate the success of our women’s shelters. The room was packed with senators, A-list celebrities, and the most powerful CEOs on the East Coast.

I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. I did not look like a woman about to lose her empire. I looked like a queen preparing for an execution.

Marcus walked beside me in a flawless black tuxedo. He wasn't acting as my security tonight; he was acting as my partner. But I knew that scattered throughout the ballroom, disguised as valets and waiters, were thirty undercover federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security.

At exactly 9:00 PM, Cassandra Sterling walked through the heavy mahogany doors.

She wore a silver gown that glittered like ice, flanked by her two massive guards. She looked utterly triumphant, believing she had broken the woman who had ruined her husband.

I met her in the center of the ballroom, right beneath the massive central chandelier. The ambient noise of the gala faded as the surrounding elite noticed the tension radiating between us.

"Elise," Cassandra purred, her voice carrying a sickeningly sweet tone. "What a beautiful party. It is almost a shame you won't be hosting it next year."

"Let's skip the pleasantries, Cassandra," I said, my voice echoing with a calm, lethal authority. "You came for my company."

"I came for what is mine," she corrected, her eyes flashing. She motioned to her lawyer, who stepped forward with a thick, leather-bound contract. "Sign the transfer documents, Elise. Give me fifty-one percent of Vale Meridian, and the fabricated documents concerning your daughter’s trust will disappear forever."

"You want me to transfer the controlling shares to your European holding company?" I asked, my voice rising slightly so the nearby guests—and the undercover agents—could hear.

"That is the deal," Cassandra smiled, holding out a gold fountain pen. "Sign the paper."

I took the pen. I looked down at the contract. Then, I looked up at her, offering a slow, devastatingly polite smile.

"I have a counter-offer," I said softly.

I dropped the pen onto the floor. It clattered sharply against the marble.

"I am not giving you my company, Cassandra," I stated, my voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel. "In fact, I just initiated a hostile takeover of your primary offshore accounts. As we speak, my forensic accountants are routing the entirety of your European liquidity directly into a federal holding account."

Cassandra’s smug smile shattered. "What are you talking about? You can't touch those accounts!"

"I can when they are directly tied to sanctioned terrorist syndicates," I replied, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by her armed guards. "You thought you could use a fake document to scare a mother. But you forgot that I balance the books for a living. I traced your money, Cassandra. You are laundering billions in blood money."

"You are lying!" Cassandra shrieked, her aristocratic composure completely disintegrating. She turned to her guards. "Grab her!"

Her guards reached into their jackets. They didn't even clear leather.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"

The music violently cut out. The undercover agents surged from the crowd, weapons drawn, swarming Cassandra’s guards and slamming them to the marble floor.

The ballroom erupted into screams and gasps, but I did not move an inch. Marcus stood right beside me, an impenetrable wall of strength, watching the chaos with cold satisfaction.

The lead Homeland Security agent marched up to Cassandra, pulling out heavy steel handcuffs.

"Cassandra Sterling," the agent boomed. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, treason, and funding sanctioned terrorist organizations. You have the right to remain silent."

Cassandra stared at me, genuine, unadulterated terror flooding her eyes as the cold steel clicked around her wrists.

"You ruined me," she hissed, her voice trembling with hatred as they dragged her away. "You are nothing but a gold-digging whore!"

"No, Cassandra," I said, my voice perfectly level, carrying across the stunned ballroom. "I am a mother. And you threatened my child."

I turned my back on her as she was hauled out of the room, the flashing cameras of the press capturing her absolute destruction.

I looked at Marcus. He offered me his arm, his eyes shining with profound, awe-struck worship.

"Care for a dance, Ms. Vale?" he asked, a beautiful, rare smile breaking across his face.

May you like

"I would love to," I replied.

The orchestra cautiously resumed playing, and as we swept onto the dance floor, the ghosts of the Sterling and Brennan families were permanently, irrevocably erased from my world.
