Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Decision

The Bennett Development board met six months after Afra’s eviction.

The audit was complete.

The findings were devastating.

Salem had not personally created every fraudulent structure, but he had approved expenses, ignored warnings, and allowed Renee’s company to receive payments without proper oversight.

Delia had also used foundation funds for personal travel and social events.

The board gave Salem two choices.

Resign and cooperate with the recovery plan.

Or fight the investigation and risk criminal charges, bankruptcy, and the complete termination of Azari land agreements.

Salem sat at the head of the table where he had once controlled every conversation.

Across from him sat Afra.

Not as his wife.

As the principal beneficiary of Azari Holdings.

She wore a navy suit and held no notes.

The board chair spoke carefully.

“Mrs. Bennett—”

“Ms. Azari,” Afra corrected.

The room went still.

The chair nodded.

“Ms. Azari has agreed not to terminate the lease agreements immediately. However, the trust requires a full restructuring plan.”

Salem looked at Afra.

She met his eyes.

“The employees keep their jobs,” she said. “The tenants remain protected. The affordable-housing commitments are restored. The foundation becomes independent. And you resign.”

Delia stared at her.

“You cannot do this to my son.”

Afra looked at the woman who had watched her stand in the rain.

“I am not doing this to him.”

Then she looked at Salem.

“He did it to himself.”

Salem nodded slowly.

He removed his executive badge, placed it on the table, and signed his resignation.

The empire did not vanish overnight.

But Salem’s control over it did.

Afra did not take the company.

She appointed an independent management team, restructured the leases, and required Bennett Development to operate under stronger tenant protections.

The city praised the move.

The tenants celebrated.

And Salem left the boardroom without the title he had used to define himself.

For the first time in his life, he had nothing to hide behind.
