Chapter 4 - The Hearing Where He Could Not Rewrite the Story

The hearing took place six weeks later.

By then, I had replaced the broken dining table.

Not with another oak table.

I chose a smaller round table in warm walnut, with four chairs instead of eight.

I wanted my home to feel like mine again.

Not a museum of what Gregory damaged.

At court, Gregory sat with his attorney and his mother behind him. He looked calm, but I could see the tension in his jaw.

His defense was simple.

He claimed I had attacked him.

He claimed he acted only in self-defense.

He claimed the audio recording was misleading.

Then the prosecutor played the entire recording.

Not a short clip.

Not the part Gregory wanted to argue about.

Everything.

The storm outside.

The dinner dishes.

His demand for my passwords.

His threats.

The crash of the table.

My voice saying no.

His voice saying he would discipline me.

The court became silent.

Then the prosecutor displayed the loan application.

The forged signature.

The unauthorized email forwarding records.

The real-estate inquiry.

Gregory’s attorney tried to say he had merely “explored financial options for the couple.”

But the judge did not seem persuaded.

The judge asked Gregory one question.

“Did your wife authorize you to use her financial information for these applications?”

Gregory looked toward me.

Then down at the table.

“No,” he said.

That was the first true thing he had said in months.

The court extended the protection order.

The fraud allegations were referred for further investigation.

And the divorce process moved forward immediately.

When the hearing ended, Gregory tried to approach me in the hallway.

Security stopped him.

He looked past them and spoke to me.

“I loved you.”

I held his gaze.

“Love does not ask someone to become smaller so you can feel bigger.”

His eyes filled with tears.

Maybe they were real.

Maybe they were another performance.

May you like

I no longer needed to decide.

I walked away.
