Chapter 2: The Coward's Awakening

The realization hit the room like a physical shockwave. The power dynamic of the entire ballroom had violently flipped in the span of sixty seconds.
Ethan, who had cowardly stood frozen in silence by the bar while his wife was publicly humiliated and physically assaulted, suddenly sprang into action. The prospect of losing his wife was one thing; the prospect of losing access to the legendary Sterling empire was entirely different.
"Maya, honey," Ethan stammered, his face pale and sweating as he rushed forward, reaching his hands out toward her. "I... I can't believe it. This is incredible news. Let me help you with the baby, let's sit down—"
Maya stepped back, pulling her sleeping daughter tighter against her chest.

"Don't touch me," Maya whispered. Her voice wasn't loud, but the newfound, unshakable strength in her tone stopped Ethan dead in his tracks.
For the first time in their marriage, the veil had been lifted from Maya's eyes. She finally saw her husband not as her savior, but as a spineless opportunist. "When your mother called me worthless, you looked away," she said, her voice echoing in the dead-silent room. "When she hit me, you didn't even flinch. You don't want a wife, Ethan. You want a punching bag for your family."
