Chapter 3: The General's Orders

Victoria, completely unraveling, lunged forward. "You ungrateful little brat! How dare you speak to my son that way in front of these people!"

She raised her hand to strike Maya a second time.

She never made it.

  • Four retired military veterans stepped out of the crowd in perfect unison, creating an impenetrable wall of broad shoulders between the rich socialite and the young mother.

  • The venue manager, realizing who Maya truly was, immediately cut the ballroom music and signaled his staff to stand down.

  • Colonel Vance caught Victoria's raised wrist mid-air, his grip like a steel vice.

"If you ever attempt to lay a hand on the General's granddaughter again," Vance warned, his voice a low, terrifying growl, "I will personally ensure the Vaughn family is financially and legally erased from this city by tomorrow morning."

He threw her arm back, causing the wealthy woman to stumble awkwardly in her expensive heels. Victoria looked around the room, expecting the politicians and investors to rush to her aid. Instead, they were looking at her with pure disgust, already distancing themselves from a family that had just committed social and financial suicide.

Vance turned his back on the Vaughns and offered a deep, respectful salute to Maya. "Ma'am," he said softly, a warm smile breaking through his hardened features. "Your grandfather's estate has been waiting for you for a very long time. Allow me to escort you and your daughter home."

Maya stood tall, the red mark on her cheek fading beneath the glowing realization of her true worth. She didn't look back at her husband. She didn't look back at her abuser. She simply nodded, walking out through the massive mahogany doors, leaving the broken Vaughn family behind in the ashes of their own arrogance.
