Chapter 1 - The Altar of Ruin

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom groaned as they swung inward, revealing a cavernous space bathed in the golden, suffocating light of a thousand crystal chandeliers. My father’s grip on my arm was a vice, a physical reminder that I was tethered to this fate, a sacrificial lamb draped in hand-stitched Venetian lace. The orchestra swelled, the strings weaving a melody that felt more like a funeral dirge than a celebration of union. Hundreds of faces turned toward me—capos, politicians, soldiers, and rivals—their expressions a mix of calculated respect and predatory curiosity.

At the end of the long, velvet-lined aisle stood Elio Viera.

He was striking, a terrifying portrait of absolute power and rigid control. His custom black tuxedo starkly contrasted with the pristine white of the floral arrangements framing the altar. His dark eyes, usually unreadable and colder than the Chicago winter, were fixed on me. But as I took my first step, the rhythm of the moment shattered.

His chief of security, a hulking man named Marco, materialized from the shadows behind the altar. He leaned in, his mouth pressing close to Elio’s ear. I watched, my breath catching in my throat, as the impenetrable facade of the city’s most feared Mafia Boss cracked. For a fraction of a second, raw, unfiltered dread flashed across Elio’s sharp features.

"Get down," my father suddenly hissed, but his warning came a second too late.

The stained-glass windows lining the eastern wall of the ballroom exploded inward. A deafening cascade of shattering glass rained down upon the front pews as the staccato roar of automatic weapons drowned out the orchestra. The screams started instantly—a chaotic, high-pitched symphony of terror as the elegant guests scrambled for cover beneath the overturned mahogany tables.

It was the Santoros. They hadn't waited for us to consolidate our power; they had chosen the wedding day to sever the alliance before it could breathe.

My father shoved me toward the floor, but the sheer weight and volume of my extravagant gown trapped me, anchoring me as a prime target in the center of the aisle. Bullets chewed through the floral arches, showering the air with shredded white roses and stone dust. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the inevitable burning impact.

Instead, a heavy, solid force slammed into me, knocking the wind from my lungs and driving me to the polished marble floor.

I opened my eyes to find Elio hovering over me, his body acting as a human shield. The scent of gunpowder, expensive cologne, and iron filled my senses. His eyes were no longer cold; they were ablaze with a terrifying, lethal focus.

"Can you move?" he demanded, his voice a low rumble that cut through the deafening gunfire.

"My dress—" I gasped, struggling against the layers of tulle and silk.

Without a word of hesitation, Elio drew a jagged tactical knife from his ankle holster. He grabbed the skirt of my multi-million-dollar gown and sliced upward, tearing through the silk and crinoline until my legs were free.

"Stay low and follow me," he ordered, pulling a sleek, matte-black handgun from his shoulder holster. "If you fall behind, I will not stop for you. Understood?"

I nodded, the sheltered girl he despised completely vanishing in the face of survival.

Elio hauled me to my feet, his free hand gripping my wrist with bruising force. We moved as a single unit, sprinting through the crossfire toward the rear service corridors. I watched him shoot with terrifying precision, neutralizing three masked Santoro gunmen before they could even aim their weapons at us. He didn't blink. He didn't hesitate. He was the monster the city whispered about, and right now, that monster was the only thing keeping me alive.

We burst through the swinging doors of the catering kitchens, leaving the slaughter of the ballroom behind us. The air here was thick with smoke and the smell of abandoned, burning food.

"Keep moving," Elio barked, pushing me toward a reinforced steel door at the back of the pantry.

As we descended into the dark, labyrinthine tunnels beneath the Viera estate, the irony of the situation settled over me like a heavy shroud. The man who had coldly declared he never wanted me was currently risking his empire to keep me breathing.
