Chapter 4 - Forged in Fire

The plan was highly reckless, bordering on suicidal. Elio would leave the absolute safety of the reinforced bunker, ascend through the hidden ventilation shafts, and link up with Bruno’s remaining men to execute the pincer movement.

"I am locking the bunker from the outside," Elio said, handing me a compact 9mm pistol. He wrapped my fingers around the cold grip, his large, warm hands steadying my trembling ones. "The door is lined with titanium. They cannot breach it without military-grade explosives, which they do not have. Do not open this door for anyone except me."

"And if you don't come back?" I asked, the reality of the situation settling heavy in my chest.

Elio reached up, his thumb gently wiping a streak of dirt from my cheek. "I will come back. I finally found something worth fighting for, Ginevra. I'm not going to lose it on the first day."

He turned, engaged the heavy locking mechanism, and slipped into the dark access panel leading to the shafts.

The next hour was an agonizing descent into psychological torture. I paced the length of the bunker, the heavy gun a foreign, terrifying weight in my hand. The security feeds became a blur of muzzle flashes, shadowy figures, and bloody confrontations.

I watched Elio move through the mansion like an apex predator. He was ruthless, efficient, and utterly terrifying. He and Bruno caught the Santoro forces in a brutal crossfire in the West Corridor, cutting down their numbers with surgical precision.

But Matteo Santoro was not a fool.

Realizing his main force was being decimated, Matteo broke away from the firefight with three of his most elite enforcers. I watched in horror as they moved down the basement stairs, bypassing the main battle. They were heading straight for the sub-levels.

They were heading for the bunker.

I backed away from the heavy steel door, raising the 9mm pistol, my hands shaking violently.

The first heavy, metallic clang echoed through the room. They were hitting the door with a sledgehammer.

"Open the door, little bird!" Matteo’s muffled voice taunted from the other side. "Elio is busy dying upstairs. Come out and we'll take you back to your father."

Another massive clang. The metal groaned, but the titanium core held.

On the security monitor, I saw Elio realize what was happening. He was three floors up, pinned behind a marble pillar by covering fire. When he saw Matteo's men on the basement feed, something inside him snapped.

He didn't call for backup. He didn't wait for a tactical opening. Elio Viera broke cover, sprinting directly into the line of fire. He took a grazing bullet to his left arm, the impact spinning him slightly, but he didn't stop. He abandoned his strategic high ground, abandoned the defense of his kingdom's upper floors, and threw himself down the grand staircase to reach the basement.

He was burning his own empire to the ground just to reach me.

Matteo’s men were attaching a small breaching charge to the bunker door when Elio arrived in the basement hallway.

The confrontation was brief, violent, and absolute. Elio moved with a primal, desperate fury that defied logic. He dispatched the three enforcers in a hail of gunfire before tackling Matteo to the ground.

I watched the security feed in breathless silence as Elio drove his fist into Matteo's face repeatedly, neutralizing the threat with extreme, unrelenting prejudice.

When it was over, Elio stood up, his white shirt soaked in crimson, his chest heaving. He walked to the bunker door and keyed in the override code.

The heavy steel door slid open.

I dropped the gun and ran to him. I didn't care about the blood, the dirt, or the violence. I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest, inhaling the scent of smoke and survival.

May you like

Elio’s arms wrapped around me with crushing force, lifting me slightly off the ground. He buried his face in my ruined hair, his entire body trembling against mine.

"You're safe," he whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to the side of my head. "You're safe. I've got you."
