Chapter 6: The Ash and the Flame

That evening, the autumn air was crisp and cold. Clara stood in the backyard of their home, standing over the stone fire pit. Andrew stood a few feet away, holding a mug of tea, giving her the space she needed but staying close enough to catch her if she fell.

Clara held Victor’s final letter in her hand. Daniel had made a photocopy for the legal files, just in case, but he had given Clara the original.

She looked at the words one last time. You are still a Monroe.

"No," Clara whispered to the empty air. "I am a Hale. And I am free."

She struck a match. She held the flame to the corner of the heavy parchment. The paper caught instantly, the bright orange fire eating away at Victor’s cruel words, turning his final attempt at control into fragile, black ash. She dropped the burning letter into the fire pit and watched it disintegrate.

Andrew walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "How does it feel?" he asked softly.

Clara watched the last ember fade into the dark. "Like he never even existed," she answered.

She leaned back against her husband. The ghost was finally gone. There were no more secrets, no more hidden accounts, no more letters. The bridge to the past had been burned to the ground, and the only direction left to walk was forward.
