Chapter 8 - The Day Marco Chose

Marco’s seventh birthday arrived in spring.

Elena planned a small party by the beach.

There were cupcakes, paper lanterns, and a kite Roman had built by hand.

When the guests left, Marco took the kite to the shore.

Roman stood beside him.

“Ready?” he asked.

Marco nodded.

They ran together.

The kite lifted into the wind, rising above the ocean until it looked like a bright blue bird.

Marco laughed.

Then he stopped.

“Roman?”

“Yes?”

“Can I call you Dad?”

Roman’s eyes filled instantly.

He turned away for one second, trying to hold himself together.

When he looked back, he smiled.

“Only if you want to.”

Marco nodded.

“I want to.”

Then he hugged him.

May you like

Roman held his son carefully, like he was holding something sacred.

Because he was.
