Chapter 2 - The Message That Destroyed Her

Julian did not sleep that night.
At dawn, he left the presidential suite while Camila was still in bed and walked through the staff entrance of the Grand Alcazar Hotel.
The hotel manager had tried to stop him.
“Mr. Rossi, employees have privacy rights,” the man said nervously.
Julian’s voice had been calm, but his eyes were not.
“I am not asking for confidential records. I am asking where my wife is.”
The manager swallowed.
“Ms. Vale is assigned to the laundry department this morning.”
Julian found Elena in the underground service wing.
It was nothing like the glittering lobby upstairs.
The walls were gray. The lights were harsh. Industrial washing machines roared behind steel doors. The air smelled of steam, detergent, and bleach.
Elena stood at a folding station, sorting white towels into neat stacks.
She saw him immediately.
Her face went still.
“You cannot be here,” she said.
“I need to talk to you.”
“There is nothing to talk about.”
“There is everything to talk about.”
Elena kept folding towels.
Julian stepped closer.
“Please.”
That word used to mean something between them.
Now it seemed to make her sad.
“You had eight months,” she said. “Eight months to look for me. Eight months to wonder why I left. Eight months to question the woman who suddenly appeared at your side.”
Julian’s throat tightened.
“I did look for you.”
“No,” Elena said. “You hired private investigators for two weeks. Then you accepted the story that I abandoned you.”
“I didn’t accept it.”
“You moved on.”
Julian had no answer.
Camila had entered his life four months after Elena vanished. At first, she had been comforting. She had been sympathetic. She told him Elena had probably needed freedom.
Eventually, sympathy became dinners.
Dinners became nights together.
And nights together became something he never should have allowed.
“I was grieving,” he said.
“So was I.”
The words struck him.
Elena stopped folding towels.
Her hand moved to her stomach.
“I was alone,” she continued. “I was scared. I had no money. No phone. No one I could trust.”
Julian felt his blood turn cold.
“What do you mean, no money?”
Elena gave a short, humorless laugh.
“You still don’t understand.”
She walked to a locker at the far end of the room and removed a small envelope. It was old and worn at the edges.
She handed it to him.
Inside were printed screenshots.
Julian looked down.
The first image was a message sent from his phone number.
ELENA, I KNOW ABOUT THE BABY.
DO NOT COME HOME.
I HAVE SPOKEN TO MY LAWYERS.
IF YOU TRY TO USE THIS CHILD AGAINST ME, YOU WILL REGRET IT.
His hands began to shake.
“I never sent this.”
Elena looked at him without emotion.
“You sent three more after that.”
He turned the pages.
Another message.
I DON’T WANT A CHILD RIGHT NOW.
YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER THAN TO GET PREGNANT WITHOUT TALKING TO ME.
Then another.
CAMILA UNDERSTANDS ME. YOU NEVER DID.
And the final message:
LEAVE BEFORE I MAKE THIS UGLY.
Julian stared at the screen.
His vision blurred.
“I never wrote these,” he whispered.
“But they came from your number.”
“My phone was with me that night.”
“Was it?” Elena asked.
He tried to remember.
The gala.
The drinks.
The investors.
Camila laughing beside him.
At one point, he had left his phone on the table near the terrace while he met with a German developer.
Camila had been sitting there.
Julian’s pulse accelerated.
“Elena,” he said, “I swear to you, I did not send these.”
She looked away.
“It doesn’t matter now.”
“It matters to me.”
“It mattered eight months ago.”
Julian reached into the envelope again.
There were photographs.
One showed Camila standing outside Elena’s doctor’s office.
Another showed Camila entering a pharmacy.
And another showed a bank transfer from an account Julian recognized.
His personal account.
A payment for $75,000 sent to a name he did not know.
“What is this?” he asked.
Elena’s face grew pale.
“Camila told me she had proof you were planning to take the baby from me.”
Julian’s heart stopped.
“She said you had hired attorneys. She said you wanted me gone because I would damage your image before the merger.”
“I would never—”
“She showed me documents with your signature.”
Julian took the papers from the envelope.
The signature looked like his.
But it was not his.
It was close.
Too close.
Someone had forged it.
“She said the money was for a doctor,” Elena continued. “She told me I could leave the country, have the baby quietly, and start over. She said it was the only way to protect my child.”
Julian stared at her.
“You believed her?”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“I believed the messages from my husband. I believed the documents with your name. And I believed it because, deep down, I knew you had been pulling away from me for months.”
That was the truth Julian could not deny.
He had loved Elena.
But he had neglected her.
He had let work consume every part of his life. He had let her eat alone, sleep alone, and attend doctor appointments alone. He had been physically present in their marriage only when it was convenient.
Camila may have lied.
But Julian had created the loneliness that made those lies believable.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Elena laughed through her tears.
“Sorry?”
“I know it is not enough.”
“No,” she whispered. “It isn’t.”
At that moment, Elena suddenly gripped the edge of the table.
Her face changed.
Julian stepped forward.
“What is it?”
She breathed sharply.
“The baby…”
“Is she okay?”
“I think… I think my water broke.”
Panic rushed through him.
“Elena, we need a doctor.”
“No.” Her voice became urgent. “No hospital.”
“You are in labor.”
“I can’t afford—”
Julian’s face tightened.
“You are my wife. You are carrying my child. You will not worry about money.”
Elena looked at him, anger flashing in her eyes.
“I had to worry about money because I thought you wanted me gone.”
The words cut through him.
Then another contraction hit her.
She cried out softly.
Julian did not hesitate again.
He lifted her carefully into his arms.
Elena tried to protest.
“Put me down.”
“Not a chance.”
“You cannot just—”
“I should have carried you through every hard moment you faced alone,” he said. “I cannot undo that. But I am here now.”
He carried her through the service corridor, past stunned employees, toward the waiting vehicle outside.
As the car sped toward the hospital, Julian looked down at Elena.
Her eyes were squeezed shut in pain.
He held her hand.
And silently, he made a promise.
He would find out exactly what Camila had done.
May you like
He would uncover every lie.
And if Elena gave him even the smallest chance, he would spend the rest of his life proving that she and their daughter would never be alone again.
