Chapter 3 - Camila’s Perfect Lie

The baby was born just after sunset.
Julian stood beside Elena through every contraction, every moment of fear, every time she tried to push his hand away and every time she reached for it again without thinking.
The doctor said it was a girl.
Healthy.
Small.
Beautiful.
When the nurse placed the baby on Elena’s chest, Elena began to cry.
Not quietly.
Not carefully.
She cried like someone who had held too much pain inside for too long.
Julian stood beside the bed, unable to move.
His daughter had dark hair like Elena’s and a tiny crease between her brows, as if she was already deeply suspicious of the world.
“She’s beautiful,” Julian whispered.
Elena looked down at the baby.
“She deserves better than this.”
Julian swallowed.
“She will have better than this.”
Elena did not answer.
He understood why.
Promises were easy.
Trust was not.
The next morning, Julian left the hospital only long enough to return to the Grand Alcazar Hotel.
Camila was waiting for him in the suite.
She wore a silk robe and looked irritated rather than concerned.
“Where have you been?” she demanded. “I woke up and you were gone.”
Julian closed the door behind him.
“Elena had the baby.”
Camila froze.
For half a second, her expression cracked.
Then she recovered.
“Oh,” she said softly. “I’m sorry.”
Julian stared at her.
“No, you’re not.”
Camila crossed her arms.
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means I know you sent messages from my phone.”
Her face went blank.
“It means you forged legal documents. It means you convinced Elena I wanted her to leave. It means you knew she was pregnant before I did.”
Camila laughed, but it sounded forced.
“You’re insane.”
Julian removed the photographs and printed messages from his jacket and placed them on the table.
Camila’s eyes dropped to the documents.
Then she looked back at him.
“Where did you get those?”
“So it’s true.”
She said nothing.
Julian’s voice became colder.
“Tell me why.”
Camila walked toward the window.
For a long time, she stood with her back to him.
Then she said, “Because Elena had everything.”
Julian felt a sick twist in his stomach.
“She had you. She had your name. She had the mansion. She had a future that was handed to her without having to fight for it.”
“Elena did not have an easy life.”
“Oh, please,” Camila snapped. “She was born into wealth. She had family connections. She had people who would save her no matter what happened.”
Julian’s jaw clenched.
“She had me. Or she was supposed to.”
Camila turned around.
“But you weren’t there, Julian.”
Her words hit too close to the truth.
“You were always at work. Always chasing the next deal. You barely looked at her. I was there when you complained. I was there when you drank too much after meetings. I was there when you said you felt trapped.”
Julian looked at her with disgust.
“I was unhappy with myself. Not with Elena.”
“You said she didn’t understand you.”
“I was weak enough to say things I didn’t mean.”
Camila’s eyes filled with anger.
“I loved you.”
“No,” Julian said. “You wanted what I had.”
Camila’s face twisted.
“I wanted what I deserved.”
Julian stepped closer.
“You destroyed a pregnant woman’s life because you were jealous.”
“I gave her a chance to leave.”
“You threatened her.”
“I protected you!”
“You protected yourself.”
Camila’s voice broke.
“You would have chosen her anyway.”
“Yes,” Julian said.
The truth hung between them.
Camila’s shoulders sank.
For the first time, she looked less like a villain and more like a desperate person who had made unforgivable choices.
But Julian could not feel sorry for her.
Not after seeing Elena’s hands.
Not after realizing she had spent months scrubbing floors while carrying his child.
He called his attorney from the hotel suite.
By noon, the police had obtained evidence from security footage, phone records, and the hotel’s camera system. Camila had accessed Julian’s phone during the charity gala. She had also contacted a private investigator using a false identity to create forged legal documents.
But there was more.
Julian’s attorney discovered that Camila had been transferring money from several accounts connected to Julian’s business.
Not millions.
Not enough to immediately raise alarms.
But enough to build a private escape fund.
The woman who claimed she loved him had been preparing to leave him with stolen money all along.
When police officers arrived at the hotel, Camila stood in the lobby beneath the same chandelier where Elena had faced him the night before.
She wore sunglasses and held her purse tightly.
As officers approached, she looked at Julian.
“You’ll regret this,” she said.
Julian’s expression did not change.
“I already regret not seeing who you were sooner.”
Camila was led away.
Julian did not feel victorious.
He felt ashamed.
Because Camila had lied, yes.
But he had allowed her close because he was lonely.
And he was lonely because he had failed to protect the love already in his home.
That evening, he returned to the hospital.
Elena was sitting by the window, holding their daughter.
She looked tired, but peaceful.
Julian stopped at the doorway.
“Camila has been arrested,” he said.
Elena’s eyes lowered.
“I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel.”
“You do not have to feel anything about her.”
“She took so much from me.”
“I know.”
“She made me believe I was unwanted.”
Julian walked closer, but not too close.
“You were never unwanted.”
Elena looked at him.
“That is easy to say now.”
“I know.”
He sat in the chair beside her bed.
“I cannot ask you to forgive me. I cannot ask you to come home. I cannot ask you to trust me because I say the right words.”
Elena watched him silently.
“But I can take responsibility,” he continued. “For the way I treated you before she ever interfered. For every dinner I missed. For every time I made you feel like you came second. For not noticing how scared you were.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
Julian looked at their daughter.
“What did you name her?”
Elena hesitated.
“Lucia.”
Julian smiled faintly.
“Light.”
“Yes,” Elena whispered. “I wanted her name to mean something hopeful.”
Julian nodded.
“Lucia is perfect.”
For the first time, Elena did not look away from him.
And in that quiet hospital room, Julian understood something he had never understood in all his years of power.
Money could buy buildings.
It could buy influence.
It could buy silence.
May you like
But it could not repair a broken heart.
Only truth, patience, and real change could do that.
