Chapter 2 - The Badge on the White Tablecloth

The silver badge spun once across the white tablecloth.

Then stopped.

No one moved.

The polished metal caught the chandelier light, and the words engraved beneath the city seal became visible to everyone seated near Claire.

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

FINANCIAL CRIMES DIVISION

SPECIAL INVESTIGATOR CLAIRE CARTER

Nathan’s smile disappeared.

Sebastian Hayes stared at the badge.

Then at Claire.

Then back at the badge again.

For the first time that night, the great Sebastian Hayes looked uncertain.

“That is a fake,” Nathan said quickly.

His voice was louder than necessary.

Claire slowly removed the soaked gray coat from her shoulders.

Underneath, she wore a simple black suit.

Not expensive.

Not flashy.

But sharp.

Professional.

Deliberate.

A small microphone was visible near her collar.

Then the doors at the far end of the dining hall opened again.

This time, no one laughed.

Six agents entered.

Two wore dark suits.

Two wore jackets marked FBI.

Another carried a sealed evidence box.

The final man walked directly toward Claire and placed a hand over his badge.

“Special Agent Daniel Reed,” he said. “Financial Crimes Task Force.”

The dining hall became so quiet that the faint hum of the chandeliers seemed loud.

Several guests lowered their glasses.

One lawyer near Sebastian slowly slid an envelope beneath his plate.

Too late.

An agent stepped beside him.

“Sir,” she said. “Please keep your hands where we can see them.”

The lawyer froze.

Nathan looked at his father.

“Dad?”

Sebastian’s face had become almost gray.

“This is a misunderstanding,” he said.

Claire looked at him calmly.

“No, Sebastian. A misunderstanding is ordering the wrong wine.”

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she removed a stack of photographs.

The first showed fake charities connected to shell companies.

The second showed wire transfers from Hayes Industries into offshore accounts.

The third showed Nathan shaking hands with a man whose name had appeared in three separate federal indictments.

Then Claire placed a final photograph in front of Sebastian.

It showed him entering a private airport hangar at 2:14 a.m.

Beside him stood a man who had been missing for six years.

A former accountant named Robert Vale.

The accountant who had supposedly died in a boating accident after accusing Hayes Industries of fraud.

Sebastian’s breathing changed.

Nathan looked at the photograph.

Then at his father.

“What is that?”

Sebastian did not answer.

Claire’s eyes stayed on him.

“Robert Vale did not die in a boating accident,” she said.

The guests began whispering.

“He was moved through three countries under false identification. You paid for his silence through accounts linked to your charity foundation.”

Sebastian’s wife stood abruptly.

“Sebastian, tell them she is lying.”

But Sebastian still said nothing.

Because men like Sebastian Hayes built their power around one belief:

That silence could always be purchased.

Claire stepped closer to the marble table.

“For nine months, I watched you,” she continued. “I watched your company create fake invoices. I watched you move money through charities created to help children. I watched you destroy small businesses that refused to sell to you.”

She turned toward one of the investors.

“And I watched you threaten witnesses.”

The man’s drink slipped from his hand.

It hit the floor.

Crystal shattered.

Nathan finally found his voice.

“You cannot prove any of this.”

Claire looked at him.

“You poured wine over a federal investigator while three hundred people watched.”

Nathan’s face went pale.

“And you did it directly beneath four security cameras.”

An FBI agent approached him.

“Nathan Hayes, you are being detained pending questioning in connection with financial fraud, witness intimidation, and obstruction of justice.”

Nathan stepped backward.

“What? No. This is insane.”

He looked around the room.

At the guests who had laughed with him.

At the investors who had praised him.

At the friends who had raised their glasses during his cruel toast.

No one defended him.

Not one person.

“Dad!” Nathan shouted. “Say something!”

Sebastian closed his eyes.

And in that moment, Nathan understood the truth.

May you like

His father had never protected him.

He had only protected the empire.
