Chapter 4 - The Evidence He Never Saw Coming

The Hayes investigation had not begun with Claire.
It began with a woman named Rosa Mendoza.
Rosa had worked as an accountant for a subcontractor connected to Hayes Industries. When she discovered that invoices were being inflated and charity funds were being rerouted, she reported it.
Three weeks later, her company fired her.
Two months later, someone vandalized her home.
Six months later, her husband disappeared for forty-eight hours after refusing to “encourage” Rosa to stay quiet.
By the time Claire met her, Rosa was afraid to leave her apartment.
But she still had copies.
Invoices.
Account numbers.
Emails.
Names.
Claire had promised her something.
“I cannot promise this will be easy,” she said. “But I can promise you will not have to do it alone.”
That promise became the beginning of a nine-month investigation.
Claire went undercover as a consultant.
She attended charity events.
She reviewed financial statements.
She listened while men in expensive suits laughed about “creative accounting.”
And then she received an invitation to Sebastian Hayes’s private anniversary dinner.
The invitation had been placed beneath a plate at the end of the table.
The only empty chair.
The chair Nathan had laughed at.
The chair Claire had claimed before anyone knew why.
Sebastian had invited her because he believed she was a junior consultant from one of the shell organizations.
He never imagined she was the person assembling the case against him.
And he never imagined she would arrive looking ordinary on purpose.
Claire wore the gray coat because it made people careless.
She wore worn shoes because people revealed their character when they thought no one important was watching.

Nathan had passed the test immediately.
So had everyone who laughed.
