Chapter 3 - The Gatekeeper's Folly

Eleanor Kensington did not walk toward the gate; she glided, her expensive heels clicking softly against the stone pavers, her entourage of sycophants trailing behind her like pilot fish. She approached the iron bars, looking through them at Skylar as one might look at an unidentifiable stain on a pristine carpet.
"What are you doing here?" Eleanor demanded, her voice carrying the sharp, entitled edge of someone who believed the mere presence of the working class was a personal insult.
Skylar stood perfectly still, her posture impeccably straight despite the exhaustion radiating through her limbs. She held the document box securely under her arm. "I have a priority delivery for Beatrice Cole. It requires a signature."
Eleanor let out a short, incredulous laugh, turning to her friends who immediately echoed the sound. "A delivery? You honestly think they let delivery girls through the main gates of this estate? Go to the service road in the back, behind the kitchens. Although, frankly, you look like you shouldn't even be allowed near the food."
One of the friends, a brunette in a beige silk jumpsuit, covered her mouth, giggling. "Honestly, Eleanor, look at her boots. She’s tracking oil onto the driveway just standing there."
Skylar did not flush with embarrassment. She did not lower her eyes. She utilized her absolute emotional control, engaging the psychological endurance that had allowed her to survive the brutal corporate world she was preparing to dismantle. She recognized exactly what Eleanor was doing. Eleanor was performing. She was using Skylar to project dominance, enforcing a social hierarchy to mask her own deep, profound insecurities.
"The delivery protocol specifies the main entrance for legal documents," Skylar said, her voice calm, flat, and devoid of the deference Eleanor demanded. "I am required to hand this directly to Mrs. Cole or an authorized resident of the estate. Are you an authorized resident, ma'am?"
Eleanor’s face tightened in fury. The polite mask slipped, revealing the ugly, vindictive core beneath. "I am going to be the lady of this house by the end of the day, you insolent little brat. I am Daniel Cole's fiancée. And when I tell you to take your trashy uniform and use the tradesman entrance, you say 'Yes, ma'am' and do exactly as you are told."
"Until a ring is on your finger and your name is on the deed, you are a guest," Skylar countered smoothly, stepping closer to the gate, her auburn hair catching the harsh afternoon sun. "I do not take orders from guests. Open the gate, or I will mark the priority package as refused by an unauthorized party, and Beatrice Cole’s legal counsel can follow up with you regarding the delay of her offshore tax filings."
The mention of 'offshore tax filings' made Eleanor freeze. She was wealthy enough to know that interfering with high-level financial documents was a catastrophic mistake. But her pride, bloated and fragile, could not allow her to back down in front of her audience.
"Security!" Eleanor shrieked, waving her hand toward the kiosk. "Get this filthy girl off the property right now! She is harassing me!"
Two large security guards emerged from the gatehouse, their expressions grim. They had clearly been instructed to keep Eleanor happy at all costs. One of them reached through the bars, attempting to shove Skylar backward.
"Step away from the gate," the guard barked.
Skylar didn't move an inch. She simply looked at the guard's hand, then up at his face. "If you touch me, I will have your bonding license revoked before the sun sets."
"I said, step away!" The guard reached through again, this time grabbing the sleeve of Skylar's jacket, fully intending to pull her off balance.

"Let her go."
The voice did not shout, yet it cut through the humid afternoon air with the lethal force of a guillotine.
