Chapter 4 - The Public Execution

The entire dynamic of the courtyard shattered instantly. The guard released Skylar’s jacket as if the fabric had caught fire. Eleanor’s vindictive sneer vanished, replaced by an artificial, beaming smile of adoration.
Daniel Cole walked out from the shadow of the main house. He wore a dark navy suit, sharply tailored, projecting an aura of absolute, uncompromising authority. His face was a mask of cold fury. He did not look at his security guards. He did not look at Eleanor’s friends, who had suddenly taken several terrified steps backward.
He walked directly toward the gate, his dark eyes locked onto Skylar.
He saw her standing there, sweltering in the heat, the heavy document box pressed to her side, entirely unbowed by the wealth and malice arrayed against her. He saw the exact same fire he had seen in the corporate lobby. She was magnificent. She was the only real thing in a world constructed entirely of expensive lies.
"Daniel, darling," Eleanor cooed, stepping in front of the gate to intercept him, reaching out to smooth the lapel of his suit. "This awful delivery girl was just causing the most dreadful scene. She refused to use the service entrance and started threatening the guards. I was just handling it for your mother."
Daniel did not stop. He walked straight through Eleanor’s outstretched hands, bypassing her completely, treating the heiress as if she were made of glass. Eleanor stumbled slightly, her face flushing a deep, mortified crimson.
Daniel approached the gate. He pressed the manual override button on the keypad. The heavy iron gates swung open with a slow, mechanical groan.
He stepped through the threshold, crossing the invisible boundary between his gilded cage and the real world.
The scene was a flawless, agonizing manifestation of the reality captured in 2.jpg. Daniel, moving with deliberate, protective intensity, reached out and took a firm, supportive hold of Skylar’s arm. He did not pull her; he aligned himself with her, placing his body between her and the venomous gaze of the heiress. Skylar looked up at him, a flicker of genuine surprise breaking her stoic facade. In the background, Eleanor stood frozen in her elegant white dress, her jaw dropped in absolute, paralyzing shock, while her friends gasped in theatrical horror at the sight of the billionaire turning his back on his prospective bride to touch a common laborer.
"Did he hurt you?" Daniel asked, his voice low, focused entirely on Skylar.
"I'm fine," Skylar said, her voice steadying. "I told you to change your policies, Mr. Cole. It seems your estate hasn't received the memo."
A faint, genuine smile touched the corner of Daniel’s mouth. "The estate is notoriously slow to adapt. I apologize, Skylar."
"Daniel!" Eleanor screeched, her carefully cultivated composure completely shattering into hysterical panic. "What are you doing? Who is this woman? You are supposed to be inside! Your mother is waiting! The board members are waiting to announce our engagement!"
Daniel turned slowly, keeping his hand securely on Skylar’s arm. The warmth of his grip was a stark contrast to the absolute ice in his eyes as he looked at the heiress.
"There is no engagement, Eleanor," Daniel said, his voice echoing loudly enough for the security guards, the friends, and the open windows of the estate to hear. "There is no merger. There will be no announcement. I would rather liquidate my entire company than tie my name to someone who treats working people like animals for her own amusement."

Eleanor gasped, taking a staggering step backward. "You... you can't do this! Your mother promised me! Our families—"
"My mother does not own me," Daniel interrupted, the finality in his tone severing the corporate tether forever. "And you do not belong at this estate. Gather your friends and leave."
