Chapter 1 - What Was Hidden Beneath the Blanket

What Alejandro saw left the air trapped in his lungs.
Across Valeria’s six-month-pregnant body were dark bruises.
Not one.
Not two.
There were bruises on her arms, fading marks along her ribs, and a swollen purple imprint around her wrist that looked like someone had grabbed her with enough force to leave a message behind.
For a long second, Alejandro could not move.
The blanket slipped from his hand.
Valeria curled inward immediately, trying to cover herself again, not because she was ashamed, but because she was afraid.
Afraid of him.
That realization struck Alejandro harder than anything he had ever felt.
“Who did this?” he asked.
His voice came out low and broken.
Valeria closed her eyes.
“You won’t believe me.”
“Who did this?”
She did not answer.
Alejandro stepped closer, then stopped when she flinched.
The movement was small. Almost invisible.
But he saw it.
And suddenly, every time he had slammed a door after an argument, every time he had raised his voice, every time he had dismissed her tears as “pregnancy emotions” returned to him with humiliating clarity.
He had never hit Valeria.
But he had not protected her either.
“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said.
Valeria gave a small, tired laugh that made his stomach turn.
“You already did.”
The words landed with brutal precision.
Before Alejandro could respond, there was a knock on the bedroom door.
Marcela’s voice floated through the hall.
“Alejandro? Is everything all right?”
Valeria’s face changed.
The fear in her eyes became immediate and raw.
She grabbed Alejandro’s wrist.
“Don’t let her come in.”
He looked at her hand around his arm.
Her fingers were shaking.
Then he looked toward the door.
“Why are you afraid of Marcela?”
Valeria released him as if she had said too much.
“I’m not.”
“Valeria.”
“Alejandro, please. Just let this go.”
“No.”
For the first time in three days, his anger was not directed at her.
It was directed at the terrible possibility that had been growing inside him since he saw the bruises.
He crossed the room and opened the door.
Marcela stood there in a silk robe, holding a cup of coffee. Her expression was carefully concerned.
“What happened?” she asked.
Alejandro did not answer immediately.
He watched her eyes move past him toward the bed.
Then she saw Valeria’s bruises.
For the briefest moment, Marcela’s face went still.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.
Alejandro noticed.
“What happened to my wife?” he asked.
Marcela recovered quickly.
“Oh, my God,” she said, pressing one hand over her mouth. “Valeria, what happened?”
“Don’t pretend,” Valeria whispered.
Marcela’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t know.”
Alejandro looked from one woman to the other.
Marcela turned to him with a wounded expression.
“Alejandro, she is not well. You know that. She has been locked in this room for days. She might be imagining things.”
Valeria stared at her.
The pain on her face was worse than the bruises.
“You told me no one would believe me,” she said softly. “You said your family would make me disappear if I talked.”
Marcela’s coffee cup slipped from her hand.
It shattered against the marble floor.
The sound brought servants running up the staircase. Doña Esther appeared at the far end of the hall, dressed perfectly despite the early hour.
“What is all this noise?” she asked.
Then she saw Alejandro standing in the doorway.
She saw Valeria on the bed.
She saw the bruises.
And something unreadable passed through her eyes.
Alejandro felt the temperature in the hallway change.
“Everyone out,” he said.
The servants looked at Doña Esther.
Alejandro’s voice grew louder.
“I said everyone out.”
One by one, they disappeared.
Only Marcela and Doña Esther remained.
Esther lifted her chin.
“You are upsetting your wife,” she said. “She needs rest.”
Alejandro turned toward her.
“Did you know about this?”
The question hung in the hallway.
Esther’s expression remained calm, but Marcela looked down.
That was enough.
Alejandro felt his chest tighten.
“Did you know?” he asked again.
“Your wife has always been fragile,” Esther replied. “She comes from a different kind of world, Alejandro. Some women cannot manage the pressure of joining a serious family.”
“Answer the question.”
Esther’s eyes hardened.
“No one has harmed Valeria.”
From the bedroom, Valeria whispered, “That’s a lie.”
Marcela looked at her mother.
“Mom…”
“Be quiet,” Esther snapped.
Alejandro turned sharply toward Marcela.
“Tell me what happened.”
Marcela’s lips pressed together.
She looked terrified, but not of Alejandro.
Of Esther.
Alejandro had known his mother his entire life. He had admired her discipline, her confidence, her ability to control any room she entered. As a child, he had believed there was no problem she could not solve.
Now, for the first time, he wondered how many problems she had created.
“Marcela,” he said, “tell me.”
His sister’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.”
Valeria covered her face.
Alejandro felt something cold move through his blood.
“What happened?”
Marcela looked toward the floor.
“Two nights ago,” she whispered, “Valeria came downstairs.”
Esther stepped toward her.
“Marcela.”
“No,” Marcela said suddenly. “No, I can’t keep doing this.”
Alejandro stared at her.
Marcela’s voice trembled.
“Valeria found the documents in Father’s old study. She found the medical records. She found the files about Elena.”
The name meant nothing to Alejandro.
But Valeria looked up instantly.
“You knew,” she whispered to Marcela. “You knew all along.”
Alejandro turned toward his mother.
“Who is Elena?”
Esther’s face turned pale.
“No one.”
“Who is Elena?”
Valeria took a breath, but her voice shook.
“She was your father’s first wife.”
Alejandro froze.
“My father was married before you?”
Esther did not answer.
Valeria continued, tears sliding down her face.
“Elena Aranda died twenty-seven years ago. The family said it was an accident. They said she fell down the staircase at the old estate in Valle de Bravo.”
Alejandro looked at his mother.
Esther’s silence was unbearable.
“But it wasn’t an accident,” Valeria said. “She was pregnant. She tried to leave your father. And when she threatened to expose what he was doing with the family companies, she disappeared.”
Marcela let out a sob.
Alejandro felt the world around him become unreal.
“My father was dead before I was born,” he said.
“Yes,” Valeria whispered. “And your mother buried the truth with him.”
Esther’s face became cold again.
“You have no proof.”
Valeria looked toward the bedside table.
Alejandro followed her gaze.
Under a stack of books was a small leather folder.
He picked it up with shaking hands.
Inside were copies of old medical records, photographs, handwritten letters, and a newspaper clipping from nearly three decades earlier.
One photograph showed a young woman with dark hair and sad eyes standing beside Alejandro’s father.
Another showed bruises on her arm.
Another showed a handwritten letter addressed to someone named Rafael Aranda.
The final page was a note from Elena.
If anything happens to me, do not believe them when they say I was unstable. I am afraid of Rafael. I am afraid of Esther. I am afraid for my baby.
Alejandro read it twice.
Then he looked at his mother.
His mother, who had taught him to respect the family name above everything.
His mother, who had told him Valeria was too sensitive.
His mother, who had spent two years convincing him that his wife was the problem.
“Where did you get these?” he asked Valeria.
“In the old study,” she said. “Behind the panel near Rafael’s desk.”
Marcela shook her head.
“She was never supposed to find them.”
Alejandro’s eyes locked onto his sister.
“What did you do to her?”
Marcela began crying.
“I only wanted to scare her.”
Valeria’s hands moved protectively over her stomach.
Marcela’s voice broke.
“Mom told me Valeria was trying to destroy us. She said she wanted the family fortune. She said if Valeria told anyone about Elena, we would all lose everything.”
Alejandro could barely speak.
“So you hurt my wife?”
“I didn’t know she was pregnant when I pushed her,” Marcela whispered.
The room went completely silent.
Valeria made a sound that was not quite a sob.
Alejandro stared at Marcela.
“You pushed her?”
Marcela covered her face.
“She fell against the railing. I panicked. I told Mom. Mom told me to stay quiet.”
Alejandro looked at Esther.
His mother did not deny it.
Instead, she said, “You do not understand what is at stake.”
He looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.
“My wife is carrying my child.”
“And she is threatening this family.”
“No,” Alejandro said. “You are.”
Outside, a car door slammed.
Then the sound of a man’s voice echoed from the downstairs hall.
“Alejandro? Are you here?”
Valeria’s face went white.
Alejandro moved toward her.
“Who is that?”
She looked at him with terror.
“That’s the man from the photograph.”
The silhouette Marcela had sent him.
The man Alejandro believed was Valeria’s lover.
Valeria swallowed hard.
“He isn’t my lover,” she whispered. “He’s Elena’s son.”
And suddenly, Alejandro understood.
May you like
The man had not come to betray him.
He had come to warn them.
