Chapter 3 - The Secret Written in Blood

For several seconds, no one moved.
Alejandro looked at Rosa as though she had spoken in another language.
“That is impossible.”
Rosa’s tears fell freely now.
“You were born six months after Elena died. Everyone believed Doña Esther had been pregnant. She disappeared from society for months. The family said she was ill and needed privacy.”
Alejandro stared at his mother.
Esther’s face had become almost colorless.
“No,” he whispered.
Rosa continued.
“Elena had twins. Mateo was the older baby. You were the younger one.”
Alejandro felt his stomach turn.
“That cannot be true.”
“I was there,” Rosa said. “I was young then. I worked in the old Valle de Bravo estate. I helped your mother’s sister care for you after Rafael brought you there.”
Marcela looked between them in horror.
“So Alejandro is Elena’s son?”
Rosa nodded.
“And Rafael’s.”
Alejandro looked at Mateo.
The resemblance he had first noticed was no longer vague. Mateo’s eyes, his brow, the angle of his jaw—pieces of Alejandro’s own face were reflected in him.
His brother.
The man Marcela had framed as Valeria’s lover.
The man who had spent his life believing his mother died alone and his sibling had vanished into nothing.
Alejandro turned toward Esther.
“You raised me as your son.”
Esther said nothing.
“You let me believe I was yours.”
“I loved you,” Esther whispered.
“You loved possession,” Mateo said bitterly.
Esther flinched.
Alejandro’s voice became low.
“Did you know?”
“I knew Rafael brought you to my sister,” Esther said. “He told me he could not allow Elena’s child to become a threat to the family inheritance. He said you would be safer if everyone believed you were mine.”
“And you agreed?”
“I had lost everything too.”
Alejandro stared at her.
“You lost your husband’s loyalty. Elena lost her life.”
Esther’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was young. I was terrified.”
“You were an adult,” Alejandro said. “I was a baby.”
Rosa stepped forward.
“Mrs. Aranda, please tell him the rest.”
Esther’s gaze moved toward Valeria.
“What rest?”
Rosa looked at Valeria’s bruises.
“The part about why she was hurt.”
Marcela began shaking her head.
“No.”
Alejandro turned slowly toward his sister.
“What did you do?”
Marcela backed away.
“Mom told me Valeria was going to destroy everything. She said she had contacted Mateo. She said if they met, they would take the company, the name, the estate—”
“So you attacked her?”
“I only wanted the documents!”
Valeria’s voice broke.
“She came into my room at night.”
Alejandro looked at her.
Valeria continued.
“Three nights ago, Marcela came with two men from the security staff. She said I had stolen family property. She tried to take the folder. When I refused, she grabbed me. I fought her. One of the men held my arms.”
Alejandro felt rage flood through him.
“You sent men into my wife’s room?”
Marcela sobbed.
“I didn’t know she would get hurt.”
“You saw that she was pregnant.”
“She fell.”
“She fell because you attacked her.”
Marcela looked toward Esther.
“Mom said it was necessary.”
The words seemed to echo through the mansion.
Esther closed her eyes.
Alejandro understood then that the family business, the wealth, the public image, the elegant dinners, the inherited properties—none of it had been built on strength.
It had been built on silence.
And silence had always required someone else to suffer.
Valeria took a slow breath.
“There’s more.”
Alejandro looked at her.
She held her stomach protectively.
“When Marcela came into the room, she said something I did not understand at first.”
Marcela’s face changed.
“Valeria, don’t.”
“She said the baby could not be allowed to complicate things.”
Alejandro went completely still.
“What does that mean?”
Valeria’s eyes filled with fear.
“I thought she meant the inheritance. But then she said your mother already had a doctor ready to make everything look natural.”
Alejandro turned toward Esther.
His voice was no longer loud.
It was worse than loud.
“Were you planning to hurt my child?”
Esther stared at him.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From my own baby?”
“From a scandal.”
“What scandal?”
Esther’s expression twisted.
“Your marriage is built on a lie. You are not really an Aranda by blood through me. If this truth comes out, the board will question everything. Investors will flee. The family will be destroyed.”
Alejandro took one step toward her.
“I am an Aranda because Rafael Aranda was my father.”
“You are Elena’s child.”
“And you are the woman who helped bury her.”
Esther’s lips trembled.
“I raised you.”
“You raised me in a house full of lies.”
Mateo stepped forward, still holding his mother’s photograph.
“My mother’s blood is in both of us,” he said. “But only one of us got to grow up with comfort, education, and a name.”
Alejandro looked at him.
“I didn’t know.”
“I know,” Mateo said quietly.
The anger in his voice had softened, not into forgiveness, but into something more complicated.
Grief.
Alejandro looked at Valeria.
She was pale, exhausted, and frightened. Yet she had endured three days of terror to protect the truth.
And he had accused her of cheating.
He had believed Marcela’s photograph.
He had ripped away her blanket in rage.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Valeria looked at him for a long time.
“Sorry is not enough.”
“I know.”
“You didn’t listen when I was afraid.”
“I know.”
“You believed your sister over me.”
“I know.”
“You let your family make me feel like I was nothing.”
The truth in her voice was unbearable.
Alejandro nodded.
“I know.”
For the first time, he did not defend himself.
He did not explain his work, his upbringing, his pressure, or his confusion.
He simply listened.
Then he took out his phone.
Marcela’s face went white.
“What are you doing?”
Alejandro dialed a number.
When the call connected, he said, “This is Alejandro Aranda. I need the police at my home immediately. There has been an assault, attempted intimidation, and evidence connected to a death investigation.”
Esther stepped forward.
“You would betray your own family?”
May you like
Alejandro looked at her.
“No,” he said. “I am ending the betrayal.”
