Chapter 4 — Veronica's Last Chance

Weeks later, Veronica requested a private meeting.

She looked nothing like the confident woman from the gala.

Her company had lost investors.

Friends had disappeared.

For the first time in years, no one rushed to open doors for her.

She expected Nathan.

Instead, Eleanor greeted her.

"I came to apologize," Veronica whispered.

"I don't expect forgiveness."

Eleanor poured two cups of tea.

"When my husband died, people treated me exactly as you treated me."

Veronica looked up, stunned.

"I promised myself I would never become bitter."

She reached across the table.

"People deserve the opportunity to become better than their worst moment."

Tears quietly filled Veronica's eyes.

Not because she had lost money.

Because someone she had deeply wronged had chosen compassion over humiliation.

That day she pledged millions to build shelters for elderly people living alone.

Not to repair her reputation.

To repair herself.
