Chapter 3 - The Confession

The next few hours were a terrifying blur of spinning helicopter blades, blinding surgical lights, and the searing sting of anesthesia.
When I finally woke up, the chaotic noise was gone. I was lying in a massive, hyper-private recovery suite with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan.
The room was perfectly silent, except for a soft, rhythmic rocking sound.
I turned my head. Adrian was sitting in a leather armchair by the window. His bespoke suit jacket was gone, his tie was discarded, and his sleeves were rolled up, revealing his ink-covered forearms. Cradled against his chest, wrapped in a pale pink hospital blanket, was a tiny, sleeping infant.
He was staring down at her with a reverence I had never seen on a man so dangerous.
"Adrian?" I rasped, my throat dry.
His head snapped up. In three long strides, he was at my bedside, leaning over to let me see the mop of dark hair and the tiny, perfectly formed face of our daughter.
"She's perfect," he murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he was struggling to contain. "Five pounds, six ounces. Lungs like a siren. She is a fighter."
Tears spilled over my cheeks as I brushed my finger against her impossibly soft cheek. "We made it."
"You made it," Adrian corrected, sitting on the edge of the bed. The exhaustion on his face suddenly gave way to a profound, heavy sorrow. "I wasn't there. I missed eight months of her life. I missed you."
"You left," I reminded him, the old hurt flaring up despite the joy of the moment. "You said I was a security liability."
"You were," Adrian said fiercely, his dark eyes locking onto mine. "But not to me. To yourself."
I frowned, confused.
"Seven months ago, the Calabrese family put a hit out on the wife of Adrian Moretti," he confessed, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "They couldn't touch me, so they decided to break me by taking you. The only way to keep you alive was to strip you of my name, push you away, and make them believe you meant nothing to me."

My breath hitched. "You faked the divorce to protect me?"
"I spent the last six months systematically dismantling the Calabrese syndicate," Adrian said, his jaw clenching. "I burned their empire to the ground so that when I finally came back to find you, you would never have to look over your shoulder again. But I didn't know... God, I didn't know you were carrying my child."
