Chapter 4 - The Empire Reclaimed

The crushing weight I had carried for over half a year evaporated into the sterile hospital air. He hadn't stopped loving me. He had become a monster to the rest of the city just to keep me safe.
"Adrian," I whispered, reaching out to touch his jaw.
He caught my hand, turning it over to press a kiss to my palm. When he pulled back, I felt something cold and heavy slide onto my ring finger.
I looked down. My diamond wedding band—the one I had left on his desk six months ago—was back on my hand.
"I signed the divorce papers," he said softly, leaning his forehead against mine while our daughter slept peacefully between us. "But I never filed them. You have always been my wife. You will always be my wife."

"You're terribly arrogant," I breathed, a tearful smile breaking across my face.
"I am," Adrian agreed, a dangerous, possessive smirk touching his lips as he looked at the family he had fought a war to keep. "And starting tomorrow, I am going to spend the rest of my life proving that no one in this city will ever touch what is mine again."
