Chapter 4 - Waking Up to the Truth

On the fourth morning, the sterile panic of the ICU finally shifted into a fragile, cautious hope.
I was sitting in the dim room, holding Elena’s fragile hand in mine. The machines around her had been reduced to a gentle, steady rhythm. Her color had returned, the terrifying ash-gray replaced by the soft, warm glow of life. I had barely slept, subsisting on black coffee and adrenaline, refusing to leave her side for more than a few minutes to check on our son in the NICU.
Slowly, agonizingly, Elena’s dark eyelashes fluttered.
I held my breath, squeezing her hand gently. “Elena? Mia luce, can you hear me?”
Her eyes opened, clouded with confusion and pain. She blinked against the harsh hospital lights, her gaze darting frantically around the room until it landed on me. Instantly, her heart monitor spiked, and she tried to pull her hand away in sheer panic.
“Where is he?” she rasped, her voice weak and terrified. “My baby. Don't let her take him. Don't let Sloane near him.”
“Hey, hey, it's okay,” I hushed her softly, keeping my hands visible and non-threatening. “He is safe. Our son is in the NICU, and he is doing perfectly. He's breathing on his own now. Nobody is going to take him, Elena. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
She stared at me, tears welling in her beautiful brown eyes. “You... you shouldn't be here. You have your new family.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the thick envelope her mother had given me. I laid it gently on the bed beside her. “I know everything, Elena. I know what Sloane and the clinic did. I know they falsified your records. I know they lied to us to break our marriage apart.”
Elena looked at the envelope, then back up at me, her defenses slowly beginning to crumble as she processed my words. “You... you didn't know?”
“I swear to you on our son's life, I didn't know,” my voice broke, the ruthless mafia boss finally shattering into the heartbroken husband. “If I had known, I would have burned the city to the ground before letting you leave. Sloane is gone. She was carrying my underboss's child in a plot to steal the syndicate. They have been dealt with. They are completely ruined.”
I fell to my knees beside her bed, burying my face against the edge of the mattress, the tears I had held back for months finally falling. “I am so sorry, Elena. I was an arrogant, blind fool. I let grief turn me cruel, and I failed to protect the only thing that ever mattered to me. I don't expect you to forgive me today. I don't even expect you to let me come home. But I am begging you to let me spend the rest of my life proving that I love you.”
Elena was quiet for a long time. The only sound in the room was the steady beep of her heart monitor. Then, I felt a soft, trembling hand rest against my hair.

“You always were an idiot when you were angry, Cassian,” she whispered, a weak, tearful laugh escaping her lips.
I looked up, meeting her eyes. The pain was still there, but beneath it, the love that had survived our darkest days was still burning brightly. I stood up and carefully leaned over the bed, pressing a tender, reverent kiss to her forehead. The war was over. The healing had finally begun.
