Chapter 2: The Truth in the Dark

The heavy doors of Daniel’s Mercedes locked with a sharp click. Outside, the gray sky began to release a freezing rain. Inside the tinted windows, the silence was deafening, broken only by the young woman’s ragged, terrified breathing.

Daniel turned on the heat, taking off his expensive suit jacket and gently draping it over her shivering shoulders.

"You're safe," he said softly, keeping his hands visible to show he meant no harm. "My name is Daniel. What is yours?"

"Maya," she whispered, pulling his jacket tightly around herself.

"Maya," Daniel repeated, swallowing the massive lump in his throat. "You said my sister... you said Elena saved you. Where is she?"

Maya closed her eyes, and a fresh wave of tears fell. "At Blackwood Manor. They call it a sanatorium, but it’s a prison for the rich to hide their mistakes. I was put there by my stepmother when I was sixteen. Elena... Elena has been there for fifteen years."

Daniel felt as if he had been physically punched in the stomach. Fifteen years. Since she was nineteen years old.

"Why?" Daniel’s voice cracked. "Why would my father do this to his own daughter? He told us she stole money and ran away to Europe! He cried at the dinner table!"

"Because she found out," Maya said, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "She found the ledgers. Your father wasn't just building a real estate empire, Daniel. He was laundering money for syndicates. Elena threatened to take the evidence to the authorities. He couldn't bring himself to kill his own flesh and blood... so he buried her alive."

The tears Daniel had cried on the park bench felt like a lifetime ago. The profound, agonizing grief over a lost sister suddenly morphed into a violent, sickening rage against the man he had called his father.

"How did you get out?" Daniel asked, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel.

"Elena traded her life for mine," Maya sobbed. "She started a fire in the west wing. She knew the guards would rush to her cell to secure the 'high-value' asset. She slipped me the keys to the service door and told me to run. She told me to find the brother who used to read her stories when they were kids."
