Chapter 2 - Elias’s eyes fluttered open

Elias’s eyes fluttered open. He caught me standing over his tray, the purple strip in my hand. He didn't ask what I was doing. He watched me with that same piercing, wolf-like intensity he had shown the day before.

It is a perfect, dual-framed portrait of our survival. In the top half of the image, you see me completely in my element—wearing latex gloves, bending over his silver dinner tray, my face a mask of pure, clinical concentration as I inspect the poisoned meal that was meant to be his last. In the bottom half, the sterile distance between us has completely evaporated. Elias is sitting up against the pillows, the gray pallor of death already beginning to recede. I am leaning in close to him, our faces inches apart, my hand resting gently on his arm. The vulnerability in his eyes has been replaced by a fierce, undeniable connection—the gravity of two people realizing they are the only ones in the world keeping each other alive.
