Chapter 5 - The King Reclaims His Throne

Vincent crumpled to the floor, screaming in pain, clutching his broken arm. Marcus was unconscious.

Elias stood in the center of the room, breathing heavily, his broad chest rising and falling. He was wearing dark trousers and a crisp shirt I had smuggled in for him days ago. He looked down at his uncle, his blue eyes colder than the Chicago winter.

"You forgot one rule about poisoning a wolf, Vincent," Elias said quietly. "If you don't finish the job, the wolf remembers who poured the bowl."

Within an hour, Elias’s loyal men—the ones who had been exiled by Vincent—were called back to the estate. The traitors were rounded up and permanently removed from the city's chessboard. The Cade family empire was violently, swiftly pulled back under the absolute control of its rightful king.

When the blood was cleaned up and the estate was finally quiet, Elias walked back into the master bedroom. I was packing my small bag, assuming my contract was fulfilled.

He took the bag out of my hands and dropped it on the floor.

"I told you," Elias murmured, stepping into my space, wrapping his strong, steady arms around my waist and pulling me flush against him. "You are never going back to that life."

He kissed me—a bruising, desperate kiss that tasted like victory and absolute possession. I had walked through the iron gates to nurse a dying man. I was staying as the untouchable queen of the man who ruled the city.
